b/c business people are evil capitalists who exploit workers.
and so they want to legally reduce their behaviors they don’t like.
Actually I think 200 years ago the wage would be something like $3 per week or maybe a month..
I know when I was born in 1961 my dad was making $45 dollars per week and was supporting a stay at home mom and 6 kids.
The dollar today is not what it was 1814. The author is correct that the standard of living has greatly improved for the lowest wage earners or the average working man. But the $3 per day argument is misleading.
Because they still believe the world is fair. They will believe this until they are waltzed right into the cage and the door slams shut.
I do think they somewhat have a point. The cost of everything is rising—gas is close to 4 bucks a gallon and the average meal coming in at close to 8 bucks, well...
We raise all sorts of hades not wanting welfare sorts, maybe some don’t want welfare and are struggling to put one through school whist the other works.
Going one at a time and trying to support themselves with prices rising like hell, I can see something of a raising of minimum wage.
Since Obamacare arrived, the unskilled don’t usually get over 30 hours, figure 4 bucks on gas to and from work, a meal at 8 bucks-—12 bucks a day.
I think an extra 2 bucks and hour is reasonable.
I don’t know. Maybe they are communists who hate the free enterprise system.
Because evil capitalists don’t shoot back....
and Liberals are cowardly scum....
Do you think anyone would dare to run on that platform in 2016?
How about putting the minimum wage argument much simpler.
Any worker in any job has produce enough value to justify his wage. Otherwise his employer must lower his wage, fire him or go broke.
The only person qualified to make that judgment is the employer. Politicians are in no position to judge a worker, the employers product production cost or the employers business plan. There is no one size fits all basic wage
If the employee feels that he or she is worth more than his current wage the employee can renegotiate with his present employer or seek other employment.
This is capitalism at its root. Labor is a commodity (skilled or otherwise). The market place will set the price at which labor is sold. This is why in the oil boom states of the North West wages have risen far above the national average. There is more work to be done than there are available workers.
And that is the best example of how to make wages rise. If government wishes to see wages increase government should get out of the way of those who produce jobs. And those who produce jobs are small businessmen. Government can make it easier to create jobs by lowering taxes which makes more money available to hire workers and reduce regulations that make it ridiculously expensive to start a business.
It isnt a difficult concept. It surprises me that so many supposedly educated people fail to grasp the concept.
When government gets involved the price goes up and the available choices goes down and the economy suffers. When the economy suffers there are fewer jobs. When there are fewer jobs the labor market suffers a glut and wages fall. It is supply and demand as the author says this is Economics 101.
Then you pay the extra $2. It’s only reasonable and “fair”.
“you would think that the educated, evolved people would have decided that the science was settled”
Exactly how much can a human being or any other species evolve within 200 years anyway?
They want to remain kids forever; they want the world to sacrifice themselves for them so they don’t’ have to change and grow and make sacrifices themselves, as is the natural order of things. A job/career means that someone has to grow up and start making sacrifices and start working at making their own way in the world.
Some have hard upbringings, hard early lives, but they fail to understand that they are not the only ones who went through bad times, that they aren’t alone in this respect. I believe that the best thing in the world would be for them to understand that life isn’t about luck, strangely, they refuse to believe that they aren’t victims.
We are already paying 2 dollars more, in case you didn’t notice.
I will never understand your reasoning for federally raising the minimum wage that employers must implement. You sound like every progressive liberal in congress. Why would you want systematic inflation, loss of jobs and creation of more government restrictions?
Because of ENVY...
It shouldn’t need to be federally mandated. It should be common sense.
Call me any name you like but common sense is common sense, I have no sacred cows to protect.
Gas costs nearly 2 dollars more a gallon than it did 6 years ago, the average drive-through menu meal-deal is up by two bucks.
Not all parents put their kids through school. Not all kids want the government/public to put them through school or pay any of their bills. Maybe they don’t want the debt for the education, either.
Tell me all about fair, then cry me a river about welfare, will ya?
You sure want to cry fair for business—I am not looking for ‘fair’. I am looking at what is reasonable with the cost of living.
Reasonable...that’s all.
Peacenik liberals? Lefty activists?
Socialists. Totalitarians. Criminals.
Further, I would like to comment that there are many smaller businesses paying their employees more than the federally mandated wage.
These smaller businesses also don’t handout to the employees how to collect government benefits.
Hobby Lobby is one company, Bill Miller BBQ is another, there are many smaller businesses that do this.
Why is that do you think? They did this before Obama.
So we should defend big business who pays just what they must but also hand out directions on how to suck the government teat?
You tell me where the problem is and explain this difference to me, would you?
There is not a lot of capitalism left. It is mostly oligopolism.
The author tries to misconstrue inflation with wage gains.
In the 4th paragraph he does correctly identify it as an unskilled labor problem. There are infinite wage and skill levels, but for discussion you break it down into 3 groups:
unskilled low wage
semi-skilled medium wage
High skilled high wage.
If you look at immigration policies(legal and illegal) and education policies, they both tend to produce low skilled low wage workers.
OTOH, high skilled high wage workers are much more effective in constricting quotas of the H1B technical and professional workers. High cost of advanced education also constricts the number of those workers.
Business people are strong advocates for higher levels of immigration and they definitely don't want to pay higher taxes to improve education.
There is nothing on the horizon that is going to change this situation.
Every election and all the time in between, Liberals are perpetually ‘educating’ and ‘re educating’ their supporters on how exploited, dis-served, cheated, etc .that they are.
All this they do in the face of Herculean, continuously increasing effort and government largess meant TO, and succeeding IN, providing a level playing field for all.
Liberals never admit that their supporters CANNOT/WILL NOT get out of bed in the morning to WORK and APPLY themselves.
I sincerely hope you self-identify as a leftist. because your thought process and your language, and everything about your statement is leftist to the core. If you think yourself a conservative, you are delusional. You may agree with a conservative tenant or two. But your thinking is leftist.
Please tell me where my thinking is leftest.
