London Luton Airport Evacuated After Suspicious Item is Found

A spokeswoman for the airport said: "London Luton airport has evacuated the terminal building after a suspicious item was found in the security search area.

"The decision has been taken with the police to ensure the safety and security of passengers and staff. Further updates regarding the security and operations at the airport will be provided as soon as possible."

Luton said later that all incoming flights had been suspended and the approach road to the airport had been closed.

Sky News sources say the alert is thought to have been sparked by a checked-in suitcase that was picked up by a security scanner.

Planes are still being diverted.

I think by now they would have been able to tell whether the security guy at the scanner freaked out over nothing or whether this was a real threat.

I feel for passengers being disrupted but better on the ground than being blown up in the air.
