Any calls politicians make to protect “jobs” are done at the expense of market efficiency. That being said, I’m always surprised that more people aren’t using self-checkout lines at supermarkets, even when lines in the cashier lanes are longer. We live in a society where people are too stupid and unmotivated to learn how to scan a barcode into a machine, though, so I doubt that the market wants to rapidly implement these devices. This is why we must be ever diligent against the existence of the minimum wage.
Well that’s a different issue, regarding self checkout. I prefer to let them scan and bag my groceries.
If I got a discount I would rethink this.
If I have just a few items I will use self checkout, but not for a big cartload.

Excuse me! With the price I pay for groceries I want someone else to bag them, put them in my cart and put them in the trunk of my car. I also would like to see the return of the gas stations which have attendants who not only pump my gas but also check my oil, the air in my tires and wash my windows. And no I’m not a liberal or a snob. I just happen to appreciate a little help.
