CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) A newly discovered asteroid will pass by Earth this weekend.
At closest approach Sunday, the 60-foot rock will pass a safe 25,000 miles over New Zealand. Thats about one-tenth the distance between here and the moon. Its also beyond the orbit of our highest communication and weather satellites.

And if it was to hit the planet, they would tell us when ?
I wish one would just hit us and get it over with
Maybe our “leaders” know we’re about to be wiped out so that’s why they don’t give a damn. They’re just going to enjoy the perks while they can. And they don’t tell us because they don’t want everyone upset and doing something to them just for fun.
Geostationary orbit is 22,236 miles
A 60-foot rock probably does not have enough mass to have any gravitational effect on our satellites.
A miss is as good as a mile!
Too bad we can’t catch it and bring it into orbit for exploitation!

I have often wondered about this very thing...
Sad thing is if true we could preserve humanity and work towards it, but the people in power would be too busy fighting for king of the hill instead of building the shelters needed for a chunk of the population...

That would crash the gold market if it was a metallic asteroid...
No.
None of the stories I was able to find on this object (designated 2014 RC) saw fit to give any estimate for its velocity with respect to Earth at the moment of its closest approach.
If, however, it is going the usual 50,000 mph for asteroids, the amount of fuel needed to capture it into Earth orbit would be (I'm guessing here) maybe a million times more than all the rocket fuel used in all the rockets ever launched from Earth.
The job of government is to investigate the impact, not predict or prevent it. It works just like law enforcement. They’ll need a lot of yellow tape.
wherever obama is going to be on Sunday is where you want to be
At least in that general area.
They'd have to shut down too many large observatories, and access to the Hubble, and silence the astronomers. Amateur astronomers would eventually see such a large asteroid, anyway. A city-killer asteroid (150 feet dia.) could make it through undetected until it just before it hits.
Is it slowing down or altering direction? We could use some different news than what's been going on.
I know. We should have started a long time ago. Maybe a solar sail and a mass driver?
