It was just about dark, I was at the kitchen table when the dog barked, headlights were coming up my driveway. I went outside to see who it was...he was a stranger.
He announced that he was from the Census Bureau and wondered if this was a good time for a 40 minute interview. He proceeded to tell me all about the Census, how it established demographical statistics and how I was required by law to answer the questions.
I told him two people live here and we are American Citizens, and that I would tell him nothing more. He said he doesn't make the rules, the politicians do, and the Census isn't political. I replied that is was and asked him why it was now being run by the White House...he denied it.
He claimed all information is "confidential" I said, just ask the NSA, they already know everything about me, have you heard about the NSA scandal? (No.) I said, all information with the IRS is supposed to be confidential, and they are sharing it with political organizations. He said "I don't work for the IRS." I told him, "I don't care, people don't trust the federal government."
Then he told me it's all about money, and we print the money that everyone uses. I said, it is the medium of exchange, but we could use gold just as well. And it's none of your business.
He repeated that it's required by law that I answer the questions. I asked, what is going to happen am I going to jail if I don't? He said; "No, this isn't criminal, it's civil."
I asked, so you are going to file a civil suit against me if I don't comply? He said, "I didn't say that." I asked, "Well just what are you saying?"
He said, "It could cost you money" and that's all I can say." I said, "Who told you that? By what authority can you violate my right to privacy and fine me if I don't comply?" He replied, "It's federal law."
I said, "Do you know what the Constitution does?" He answered, "It authorizes the census." I told him, "It limits what the federal government can and can't do, and it doesn't say you can come on my property and cross examine me."
He said, "I work for you."
I was wild..."I've told you all I'm going to tell you, and if you claim you work for me, I'm telling you we're done." and pointed towards the road.
He left. The whole ordeal took about 30 minutes.
Has anyone here had a similar experience with a tenacious census taker? I'd say don't engage them in the yard, and for God's sake don't let them in the house.
No idea why your blood would be boiling.
I didn’t think census takers interviewed citizens. Was this recent? Sounds like this may have been an impostor.
Well.. they just got to ME.! I had them call and threaten me with the IRS in 2009, I would be “prosecuted” if I did not fill out the 40-50 page anal probe. I told them to go screw and refused to answer every question.
Then they sent some poor retiree to my front door, has a mat that says “GO AWAY”.
We don’t use that door.
Tell them the min. so many people , one dog and refuse the rest.
When he said "it's all about money" I told him, "I told you what you needed in about 30 seconds. We've been out here about 30 minutes...Who do I send the bill to?"
so when exactly did this encounter take place?
I DO NOT THINK HE WAS A REAL ONE.....JUST MY OPINION BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS OVER FOR NOW,,,Report it to the police as it my be a new scam going on. They should know to get eye out
Apparently you do.
Did you throw away an American Community Survey? That’s what they call the long form that asks the really intrusive questions. That is obviously what he was doing.
I swear the “progressives” are planning to use the information they collect to plan their utopian communities where everyone is required to live within walking distance to their jobs, etc. because we won’t be allowed to own automobiles. Why else do they want to know how far you commute every day?
They continuously do census studies, basically the long form that most of us ignore. Yes, there is the 10-year biggie, but they have to justify their existence so these census studies take place to ‘update’ their findings.
That's what I thought. I was starving, but now I've completely lost my appetite. My .38 is right here on the table.
I foiled the last census taker who came on my property by speaking Russian. If the census bureau had sent out a Russian speaker, I would have sent out my wife who speaks Chinese. Husband-wife tagteams work well.
Haven’t been bothered since.
“He said, “I work for you.” “
Then you are fired.
“Who here knows the law, and the proper way of dealing with them? “
First of all, this has to be several years old. The only issue I had with the guy, was that he spent 30 minutes sparing with the “census taker.” I took the census by mail and only answered what’s Constitutionally required. Several months later a woman showed up in her car looking to get the “other questions” answered. I was outside so I spoke with her on my driveway. She had some of the same threats to level, but I simply told her that I had provided all that they were going to get, that she needed to leave, and further, since I live on a private road that she needed to make her way quickly back to a government-owned street. Never heard from anyone again.
Would he have stuck around and wasted time making himself conspicuous for 30 minutes when his Census Taker ruse tanked?
Or would he have eaten his losses and moved to the next mark?
Ditto.
There is no census being taken this year. The man was trying to con you at a minimum, may have been casing your house. Report him to the police.
I asked him where he was from, he was from a nearby city.
He wouldn't shut up....way worse than me.
First of all no one has the right to come on your property without your allowing them to. Secondly you should have asked him to show you identification, asked for the name of his supervisor and a phone number that said person could be reached at, told him to go wait in his car while you made the call. And then without this ‘’census taker’’ being aware of it you should have called the cops and told them you have someone on your property posing as a census taker and you want them to get here right now.
