Tesla reportedly selects Nevada to build massive $5 billion battery plant

RENO, Nev. – Tesla Motors has chosen Nevada as the site for a massive, $5 billion factory that will pump out batteries for a new generation of electric cars, a person familiar with the company's plans said Wednesday.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made, said work would soon resume at an industrial park outside Reno.

Four other states -- California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico -- were vying for the project and the estimated 6,500 jobs it will bring.

Good post. As I noted in #18, northern Nevada’s extremely business-friendly, and as far as taxes go, anyone would be nuts to locate a plant in California when Nevada is right next door.

“You could be right, because I haven’t seen evidence that electric cars are in such demand that money can be made by building such a plant.”

This car is a passing fad toy for the very rich. The demand will taper off. It will never be a mainstream car. We’re probably 50-100 years from an alternative vehicle that will beat gas and diesel. Five billion seems high for a battery factory. Very high. For the demand they have now it seems the batteries could be built by a contractor at a fraction of the price. But they’re taking the 100% high-risk path, which means they intend to fail. The top guys will bail on platinum parachutes.

This is 100% crony capitalism.
There’s no way Tesla is gonna lose money.
Musk is a Baraqqi partisan.

I did a google search and I see nothing about Tesla getting Federale loans to build this battery plant. This is all private sector investment

Does Dingy Harry happen to own any land near the plant site?

Too complicated a transaction. I'm betting on Halliburton case stuffed with Fedbucks.

How about tax credits for decades from the state?

I doubt anyone knows as yet, Musk is in this with Panasonic so maybe there won’t be any fed backed loans...maybe.

When I see Elon Musk and Harry Reid in the same deal, massive alarm bells go off.

Let’s see how this unfolds before absolving it of being a crony capitalist bonanza.

The 6500 union members employed would be a nice bonus for Dems also helping lock in control of the state.

Why do you think the push was on to drive Clive Bundy off the range land he was on? The backdoor deal was for the Tesla plant to locate just about where Bundy had been running his cattle.

Examining the particulars of the deal would show that Harry Reid was in on the manipulations and various degrees of pressure involved, and that some exchange of influence and/or cash was accomplished.

I heard some radio talk show host comment on this the other day. It seems no one bothers to pencil whip the numbers.

Remember this is just a location and plant for batteries, not for the production of autos.

1. They want 1000 acres suitable for industrial development free. Stop and think about the probable size of a battery factory plus parking. Maybe 100 acres at the outside, ya think?

2. Divide $5 billion by any reasonable cost of batteries for a production run of a luxury electric car. At $5000 per Tesla, they’d have to sell a million cars to amortize the initial cost of the battery plant. I don’t know if 5K is a reasonable figure for a car battery.

3. Does it really take over 6000 workers to produce this number of batteries for a million cars, give or take?

I don’t see how a lithium ion battery can be produced for $5K in the foreseeable future that’ll power a cheaper Tesla or even a Chevy Volt. As far as the Model S it’s out of the question.

I’m no engineer but people who are seem to think a battery breakthrough is in the distant future if at all.

don’t see any thing about unions, and NV is a right-to-work state.

Reno would be Washoe County. Bundy is in Clark County - quite a ways apart from each other

They got a huge government loan, and paid it back in full. They can’t make Teslas fast enough. Right now, there is a 4 month waiting list for new orders.

Harry Reid is smiling!

Reno doesn't really like Reid. Now Las Vegas...... they love him!
