The murder of US journalist Steven Sotloff was a “barbaric act” by a group of “murderous psychopaths”, the Home Secretary said.
Theresa May said the horrific video showing the execution of the 31-year-old report by terror group Isil made clear their brutality.
It came as a former security minister said the apparent British jihadist behind the murder – and that of US journalist James Foley last month – was a “dead man walking”.
The fanatic, known as Jihadi John, is being hunted by the security and intelligence services after appearing in both execution videos and has now threatened to kill a British hostage.

"Our thoughts today must, of course, be with Steven Sotloff's family and friends at this very difficult time.
"As far as the Government is concerned, we recognise the threat that is posed by Isil and we are taking steps, and will continue to take steps, to make sure we have the powers that are right to protect our national security.

I think the constant use of words like "terrorists", "crazy", "psychopaths". "murderous" is blinding us to the reality of an enemy army, growing in strength and sophistication.
Murderers need police. Psychopaths need doctors.
Enemy soldiers need military force, and the people who send them need conquest.
Psychopaths don’t need doctors. They need exorcists.
No cure for them is available except maybe a Demascus Road experience.

Obama will never consider such an action, but step one would be to carpet bomb Roqqa, Syria, the “capital” of the Islamic State. Turn it into a moonscape.
