Islamist militias in Libya took control of nearly a dozen commercial jetliners last month, and western intelligence agencies recently issued a warning that the jets could be used in terrorist attacks across North Africa.
Intelligence reports of the stolen jetliners were distributed within the U.S. government over the past two weeks and included a warning that one or more of the aircraft could be used in an attack later this month on the date marking the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, said U.S. officials familiar with the reports.
“There are a number of commercial airliners in Libya that are missing,” said one official. “We found out on September 11 what can happen with hijacked planes.”
The official said the aircraft are a serious counterterrorism concern because reports of terrorist control over the Libyan airliners come three weeks before the 13th anniversary of 9/11 attacks and the second anniversary of the Libyan terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi. . .

Maybe because Egypt is poor but heavily populated, Libya is oil-rich but lightly populated, and Egypt and Libya are ancient enemies. If Egypt could grab a bunch of Libyan oil wells, it would have a nice source of income to buy grain to feed its populace.
Range: Probably enough to hit Algeria, Tunisia, Cairo, Tel Aviv, Riyadh, Sana (Yemen), Dubai, UAE, Rome/Vatican/Italy, Greece, France, Spain (in revenge for the loss of Andalusia, and maybe Switzerland. Perhaps all the way to Germany and northern France, depending on fuel supply and empty flying weight.
The good think is that this large planes are relatively slow compared to supersonic planes, and present a good radar profile. However, if they fly low, they might escape detection (i.e. the disappearance of the first Malaysian plane).
I’m going to speculate but I suspect that Israel and Egypt, maybe even Kenya, are working together to throw up a regional radar-detection-net in case these planes come their way. The same for southern Europe countries, and even the Saudis/Israel/UAE (covertly).

Queerdaffy was chastened by Reagan’s attack and from a US point of view, and perhaps to many Libyans, he was far preferable to the violence and chaos that reigns today. I’m sure he felt douuble-crossed by the US. US foreign policy should always be based on what’s best for the United States. I guess that is now a radical viewpoint.

Ditto, also when Bush was in office Libya suspended its Nuclear program. And was helping us with intel on Al-Queda. He was also Secular and watched out for other religions in Libya. Obama wanted these whackadoodles in as the Government. As you I did feel sorry for him.
