Eye and head tracking sensors will make it harder to text while driving
General Motors is reportedly installing sensors in its next generation of cars that will detect drivers eye and head motions and alert drivers to prolonged moments of distraction...
(Excerpt) Read more at time.com ...
No thanks.
With the quality of GM cars you’ll be lucky the vehicle doesn’t drive itself off the Road.
[When did we all decide to become Luddites? ]
When we realized that certain technology can be a bridge too far in terms of privacy....
LOL
That’ll fix ‘em.
[ They should have bad driving detectors. If they profiled the braking and steering patterns, theyd know who was getting out of the zone and needing to panic-correct. If you pay attention, your insurance company should give you a discount. ]
They already do....

[ I predict a rash of accidents caused by drivers who were distracted by their GM Motion Sensors beeping or shouting at them. ]
The data taken from such systems will be used to mandate expensive self driving cars....
Just wait...
It will happen...
How is that? Do you think they are sending records of your head movements to the NSA?

No, but I can see them mandating that the alarm data from this eventually being recorded and mandated that it be stored via black box for accident/insurance purposes and then eventually into a “Traffic Safety Database”. It won’t be the NSA, doesn’t have to be, the Dept. Of Transportation will be over it.
Insurance companies and taxing entities will especially love to track miles driven. Here in Texas, Law enforcement is incorporating everything into your license plate. Registration, Insurance, CHL, Inspection, Biometrics such as your digital image on your Drivers Lic.
Special reflectivity plates with water marks for plate recognition software (ALPR’s). Automatic License Plate Readers are now mounted on police cruisers pointing every direction to allow high speed acquisition of lic. plates numbers even in low light conditions.
Won't be long, these units will be mounted on overpasses and or along the roadways to detect motorist with violations. Fair to say, this technology will be sold as a way for LEO’s to detect stolen vehicles.
Give an inch, they will most certainly take a mile. This someday will be used to track every citizens movements and this data will be stored in case of investigations.
Drive a car in Texas? Your anonymity is no more. When you leave town, go to work, off to the market...all will be digitally collected.
But if you are not doing anything wrong you don’t have anything to fear... right.....
Well except in cases where the government’s modi operendi is “Selective Enforcement”....
You are arguing for the right to drive a car while distracted?
If this little bit of technology can help prevent an accident, where is the harm?
I don’t see what the fear is here. Help me out. So what if the car records that you were distracted at the exact moment that your car takes out a light pole?
Think about what happens if this gets put into the phone...
Should no person in the vehicle be allowed to talk on or text on their phone?
Try writing requirements that do not affect non-drivers in the vehicle, without requiring a direct link between the vehicle and the phone.
Really? You are kidding right?
What’s next after they own our thoughts in our own vehicles?
A few years back I was so proud to become a Grandmother, now I’m scared to death for my little loves... will there be anything they can do that isn’t monitored, will they even know what it is like to be free?
The whole idea makes me sick!
I don’t want the government or insurance company in my car with me.
[ You are arguing for the right to drive a car while distracted? ]
No I am not.
[ If this little bit of technology can help prevent an accident, where is the harm? ] No Harm if it is used for that purpose.
[ I dont see what the fear is here. Help me out. So what if the car records that you were distracted at the exact moment that your car takes out a light pole? ]
Imagine this scenario, you are on the road in a multipel lane highway, there is a semi truck next to you and has a load on it of pallets or soemthing and something falls from it, your perepheral vision sees it and your eyes move to the debris falling off the truck as some hits the side of your car... all of a sudden the person ahead of you slams on their brakes and you rear end them....
They convict YOU of manslaughter because you slammed into a mini-van of kids ahead of you that slammed onthe brake because the “eye sensor” said you were distracted (even though the distraction was legitimate), but they trust the sensor more than your testimony...
Enjoy getting out of that....
Better than black tape, buy anything but GM.
This will come with a black box and also instant tracking by the feds. Ala the movie Minority Report.
should do wonders for their sales....
who wouldn’t want their mother riding with them nagging all the time?
Well, that goes without saying. They're not the innovators with this technology, though. Mercedes has been touting a very similar system for two years or more, so you know that it'll be spreading to the less costly marques as well - if it hasn't already done so.
