FTA: Six months later, the war ended in a virtual stalemate, and British leader George Cockburn returned home, where his portrait features Washington blazing in the background.

Didn’t know that about the Washington portrait. That’s pretty amazing...

Another article about the War of 1812. I didn’t know about the British general who had his portrait painted against a backdrop of Washington ablaze.

Major General Robert Ross wasn't quite as lucky.

In the second of two skirmishes that led to the Battle of North Point, Major General Robert Ross, having been shot by members of Captain Edward Aisquith’s First Baltimore Sharp Shooters, who were in the forward advance, was taken in route back to the British landing site. Along the North Point Road, his staff laid the General by the side of the road under a large poplar tree that over hung the roadside. It was here he breathed his last. An entry in the captain’s log of HM Ship-of-the-line Royal Oak states clearly that Ross’ remains arrived onboard that evening at 9 p.m., some eight hours after having been shot.

As Dolley Madison was busy cramming silverware into her purse, ....She was precursor of Hillary Clinton? Who knew?

I remember reading several books as a child about Dolley Madison and the Washington painting. That’s really why I remember her.

I think it’s reasonable to note that this British victory was far and away the most embarassing defeat in American military history. The British forces involved were no more than a raiding party in size. Around 4,000, if I remember correctly.

There is absolutely no way they should have been able to penetrate to and conquer the national capital. The Virginia and Maryland militia alone should have been able to stop them.

James Madison was a very great man, but he was a really, really lousy war president.

I pigged out on Dolly Madison bakery snacks as a kid...loved their chocolate zingers. Too bad Hostess Twinkie Co. acquired the brand years ago, and like the first White House, both bakery brands together went down in flames with no First Lady to save 'em.

Our current food-nazi first lady would burn ALL cream-filled, chocolate-y, heavily-iced, eagerly-eaten lunch-bag yummies if she could, no doubt about it.

Leave it to SeeBS.

"Fearing an American counterattack, the British occupation of Washington lasted only a day."

Poppycock.

God sent a tornado and drove the British out in terror.

And the torrential rains put the fires out.

The Tornado That Saved Washington

The day of the invasion had been hot, 100 degrees. With much of the city aflame the next day, British soldiers kept moving through, lighting more fires. They didn't notice the darkening skies, the thunder and lightning. City residents knew a bad storm was on its way and quickly took shelter. The British, though, had no idea how bad a D.C. storm could get.

The clouds began to swirl and the winds kicked up. A tornado formed in the center of the city and headed straight for the British on Capitol Hill. The twister ripped buildings from their foundations and trees up by the roots. British cannons were tossed around by the winds. Several British troops were killed by falling structures and flying debris.

The rain continued for two hours, dousing the flames. The British decided it was time to leave."
