To put it another way, an area the size of Alaska, Americas biggest state, was open water two years ago, but is again now covered by ice.
The most widely used measurements of Arctic ice extent are the daily satellite readings issued by the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, which is co-funded by Nasa. These reveal that while the long-term trend still shows a decline last Monday, August 25, the area of the Arctic Ocean with at least 15 per cent ice cover was 5.62 million square kilometres.
This was the highest level recorded on that date since 2006 (see graph, right), and represents an increase of 1.71 million square kilometres over the past two years an impressive 43 per cent.
Other figures from the Danish Meteorological Institute suggest that the growth has been even more dramatic. Using a different measure, the area with at least 30 per cent ice cover, these reveal a 63 per cent rise from 2.7 million to 4.4 million square kilometres.

Probably a wise decision.

“Holy crap! That ice building up must be due to CO2 somehow”
OMG! I think you’ve solved it. It’s dry ice that’s accumulating!

I still love my desktops, now with 1920 x 1080.
And a keyboard with buttons the size of my fingers and not a totally dysfunctional "real-time" spel-chk.
Sitting out in the b/y with the dog, a hand-me-down s/f has to do....

Hmmm... I never have that problem on my desktop PC. All spelling errors are mine.

Although the country cannot ignore military issues at this time, I will put military issues aside to make the following point about Mr. Carson’s partially unfounded concern about the difficulty of being president.
As much as Obama has lowered the bar with respect to blatantly ignoring the federal government’s constitutionally limited powers, Mr. Carson doesn’t seem to understand that all he needs to do as president is the following. He needs to lead corrupt Congress to end all constitutionally indefensible federal taxes after which he can start spending as much time on the golf course as Obama does. In other words, President Carson can simply move the federal government aside and allow the sovereign states to rebuild themselves as the Founding States had intended.

In my case, Android s/w (and big thumbs) makes me look like a target to the Spelling Popos.
Desktops still rule (as far as being accurate and fast). Not so mobile. YMMV.

Ice thickness has to be included with extent to get a realistic picture. There’s no global warming.
To: BenLurkin
This really won’t give the Enviro wackos any problems at all.
If you’ll look back to the 1970’s, most of the same wack-jobs that are now claiming global warming, then were claiming global cooling. They’ll just dig up the Time magazine copy from that period with a cartoon on the cover of people freezing in their homes and say, “see, we WERE right!”

If Al Gore believed his prophecy of melting ice caps catastrophically raising sea levels , why did he buy a seaside mansion in California? This is just more real evidence that man caused global warming is at least a debunked theory if not a total hoax. With real science the mounting observed climate data that does does not remotely fit the increasing CO2 levels causing higher global temperatures theory would cause that theory to be rejected. However man caused global warming is a dogma of the climate change cult and cannot be questioned despite mounting data that proves it wrong. Further proof that climate change is a cult dogma is that any actual scientific data like this that shows the theory to be wrong is dismissed as the work of “deniers” i.e. heretics and is attacked by a climate change Inquisition.

"the long-term trend still shows a decline"They had to throw in a subtle pro global warming spin, didn't they. CERTAINLY, the "long term" trend still shows a decline. 15,000 years ago, the Arctic ice cap glaciers extended all the way to the state of Ohio.
The real facts are that the catastrophic decline in Arctic ice, heralded so breathlessly several years ago has reversed, and Arctic ice has rebounded at an astounding rate.

ClearCase_Guy ....
The only thing that I'm "astonished" about is that Free Republic's "Carry_Okie" didn't have this data in his back pocket back in 1998.
Of course, we all know that "Global Warming" is a socialist-inspired myth to accomplish the New World Order agenda.
The only problem is that it's taken almost 25 years for the "real data" to reach "critical mass" in the information stream.
It way too late, but better late then never.
Turning to another subject, NASA's planned "Destiny" Mars orbiting space station, planned for 2035.
I wonder if anyone at Free Republic can tell us "now" how the Water Recyling System will fail during orbit # 2,875.
Hint ... Free Republic's "Carry_Okie" can help us out !
After all, "Carry_Okie" tells us that "everyone" knew back in 2001 that global warming was a complete fraud.
Everyone.
