The Islamic State is nothing if not ambitious. Despite no record of current 'airplane' assets in their annual reports, ISIS has begun detaining and forcing Syrian pilots to train militant fighters to fly stolen aircraft. According to CNN Arabic, the pilots (and their planes and helicopters) were abducted when the terrorist group gained control of Tabqa military base. It appears that if beheadings, executions, and whippings are not enough to strike fear into the hearts of the locals, then (just as America is tryiung to do), an air assault will greatly demoralize. We can only imagine how this changes Obama's strategy (and just where are all the rest of Syria and Iraq's airplanes stored?)

Via Al Arabiya,

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria said in a recent tweet it is forcing detained Syrian pilots to train militant fighters to fly stolen aircraft, CNN Arabic reported on Saturday.

In an account reportedly associated with the militant group, ISIS said in a tweet the pilots were abducted when the group gained control over the Tabqa military airbase in Raqqa Province.

ISIS seized the airbase earlier this month. The major airfield houses warplanes, helicopters, tanks and other artillery and ammunition, which were also confiscated by ISIS, according to several media reports.

ISIS did not provide any information about the nature of the training, according to CNN Arabic.

It takes time to train an effective combat pilot.

It might be cover, to allow Saudi and Pakistani pilots to fly for ISIS, while maintaining deniability.

To maintain an Air Force is something only a country can do because of the cost alone.

Each one of these aircraft require hundreds of hours of maintenance for every hour in flight. Moreover, it requires a well trained, highly motivated, extremely disciplined group of people just to keep it in the air. Plus you have continue to buy parts, fuel, etc to keep the aircraft.

What I’m saying is that IS/ISIS/ISIL is being funded by a country. These savages could not do anything without the financial help, training and arms coming from another country. Now the average ISIS savage is too stupid to realize they are being used as a proxy for anther State.

Now do you find it odd how a radical Islamic group has the same interest as Saudi Arabia in Syria and Iraq?

Don’t you think it’s strange that ISIS would go all the way over an attack Europe, the U.S. first and bypass Israel??? After all they are a radical Islamic group.

Why would they do this? Perhaps to give their governments the excuse they desperately need to attack Syria. After all Saudi Arabia wants that gas pipeline to Europe that Syria declined to sell them.

Remember the Globalist have tried that twice now by saying the Syrian government was using chemical weapons. Well when everything was said and done it turns out it was the FSA/AL-Qaeda after all that did this in order to get us in the war. This is because Syria has the FSA stuck in a quagmire.

Oh and who said ISIS would do this today? Once again our “friends” the Saudi’s.... You remember the same country that were 15 of the 19 hijackers. Oh but don’t worry we attacked Iraq. Yeah that made a lot of sense.... (sarcasm off)

I know some will say, There is NO WAY the Saudi’s could be behind all the funding and arming of Al-Qaeda/ISIS/IS/ISIL even though they seem to have the same economic interest. Common folks.... put two and two together.

"Every last one of these aircraft should be bombed to obivion"

They must be hidden well, otherwise you'd think they'd be scrap by now.

ISIS: you are my prisoner and you and your plane must attack our enemies. Your mission is to fly your plane and shot down American warplanes.

Captured pilot : ok

ISIS airtraffic controller: You are off course, return to base now

Captured pilot: do the letters FO mean anything to you? Over and out!

I guess you could do that if you are over friendly territory. But those aircraft have considerable value.

Should I be worried about being kidnapped, to teach these scoundrels how to control airplanes?

They have over $6 billion dollars and counting. You can hire mercenary maintenance personnel from the third world (MiGs are everywhere) for $20,000 a piece all day long.

Given their trigger-happy reputation vis-a-vis even non-observant Muslims, I suspect only the most dedicated Islamists will work for them.

begun detaining and forcing Syrian pilots to train militant fighters to fly stolen aircraft.

And that will be the surest way to destroy their air force that I can think of.

You're thinking ethics. I'm thinking physical safety. Nobody will work for an employer known for killing people like him because it was divinely ordained.

they could have a 100 of them but you need 100 capable pilots thats the hard part

If they're not worried about landing again intact, the capable part changes a bit.

The Pilots may only need to fly a one way mission—on auto-pilot most of the way—How far can a Mig go on one tank of gas? Maybe to Babgdad? Mecca? Cairo? To US ships in Gulf? Isreal? Maybe shoot down a US Plane—maybe Air Force One? Maybe ship it to Mexico—fly it across the border—hit White House? Freedom Tower? Disneyland? las Vegas? New Orleans? Houston? Lots of creative ways to use warplanes.
