Google Threat to FreeRepublic
8/30/2014 | Wuli

Posted on 08/29/2014 10:19:41 PM PDT by Wuli

Twice in the past 30 minutes, when executing a link to one of the FreeRepublic posts, Firefox sent me a warning page that the "site" I was going to was a malware threat.

In more detail, the notice explained that it gets that threat info from Google, and that FreeRepublic had been identified as a "malware" threat.

Who knows if some troll got p-o'd or if WH trolls are involved in having set up the threat notice at Google.

I don't know what the mods can do.

I'll take that as a "no" and you don't know how to find the build number on your firefox product.

Google is dangerously close to becoming what Americans a century ago called a "trust," and what statutes refer to as an illegal monopoly.
It wouldn’t be the first. The Associated Press and its membership is (not are) “a conspiracy against the public” (Adam Smith). IMHO “bias in the media” is rooted in that fact (even tho “bias” in nonfiction is a separate - and possibly entirely intractable - issue).

Given that the core function of the AP - the economical distribution of news over expensive telegraph lines - has been mooted by the technological advances which make the Internet practical, the AP is no longer “too big to fail,” it is too big - period.

“Late-model”/newer browsers have built-in malware protection (the page you are seeing)...they use Google’s “list”....(see my post #107 on this thread). The “threat” link on that thread was removed by a FR mod. earlier (post #4)...the thread is “safe” now, but Google has it marked with a “scarlet letter”. To turn off the Firefox malware warning see this: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-does-phishing-and-malware-protection-work#w_how-do-i-use-the-phishing-and-malware-protection-features

Meh... Google is evil. Ignore their mission statement.

You avoid them like you avoid an oncoming bus.

Firefox uses this Google “bad list” as described in my prior posts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Safe_Browsing

The Mods have probably reported the thread in question as being “fixed” now, using this Google form: https://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_error/?tpl=mozilla

You have repeatedly missed my point. If you search Google

I think I got your point. You haven't the faintest idea.

Google alerts to something on your google based browser, and you maintain that it has nothing to do with your OS, browser, or Google.

And to prove that, you post a link from Google.

Got it.

I'll get right with the Lord, because you outsmarted me, you did.

Wow...

It was Firefox completely naked with no add-ons...

It was never my browser doing the redirect to the warning page - I said as much.

Google presents search results based on a search. Hence clicking the the first search result based on the search phrase I provided you... When you click the first link they provide it takes you to the warning page regardless of browser you use. It is Google’s Web site doing the redirect via their own search results link.

Am I talking to a wall? And the snark keeps on coming...

It was Google’s search engine that returned a link to a warning page that the requested URL was unsafe.

Google flagged the particular FR thread as unsafe because of the remote image link someone inserted in a reply.

So if you search Google (including the site name freerepublic in the search) for the FR thread in question the first link to the thread it returns is marked as unsafe from the get go meaning your browser isn’t doing the redirection to the warning page. It was embedded in the search result link Google provided directly.

I'm hesitant to offer advice at this point. A quaking virginal type (that will smack you down).

Perhaps you might consider um... I don't know... getting a frigging clue?

How about you offer up your OS type and browser and build number if you want to gripe about something?

Am I being harshly sarcastic?

Haven’t Googled for any FR threads lately, but it makes sense that a Google results page would list that particular thread as “dangerous”....it got marked before the Mods could delete the bad link. Here is the Google search for the thread’s URL: https://www.google.com/#q=www.freerepublic.com%2Ffocus%2Ff-news%2F3198639%2Fposts
It is still listed as “dangerous”...if you desire to report it as “fixed”, use this link: https://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_error/?tpl=mozilla

You do know that google's search engine knowa what OS and browser you use, and returns different results based on your previous searches?

I get ads for baby diapers and parts for 1960 Bentlys.

I mess with google. I'm sure they have an app for that.

“I got the warning from DuckDuckGo too”

And they use a Russian search engine.

At no point did I ask for your “advice” nor did I claim I was having any particular problem that needed solved.

I was simply confirming to the author of this thread’s concern that Google had flagged this site as unsafe. So I provided two links to the warnings and the specific details of the warning directly from Google’s Web site to help identify why other people were seeing these warnings. In addition it narrowed down that Google wasn’t claiming FreeRepublic.com was unsafe, only a specific thread and why.

Any browser and OS would have returned the same links I provided by doing what I did - searching Google for “FreeRepublic WH Responds to Petition to Demand Release of Marine Held in Mexico” and then selecting the first link they provide - it takes you directly to the warning with the option to continue - all via Google’s web site and nothing to do with the browser type or OS.

But you keep on interjecting yourself telling my how stupid I am and smart you are all the while never getting the fundamental point...

Yes. I don’t normally Google FR threads either. I only did it, and with Firefox, to confirm the author’s concern about FreeRepublic.com being flagged as dangerous by Google.

And yes, I’m fully aware that the browser headers identify the browser, OS and many other details. I’m also aware that none of that mattered for the information I provided.

Am going to get off here soon. Geron, no information found regarding cyber attacks before 9-11. Was a fruitless search. JRandom, I saw something perhaps of interest on youtube earlier tonight. Was an add that was supposed to be sponsored by google because when went to complain the link went to google. Wish could remember all the particulars but am unable to remember everything. Was the first time have seen that particular add. Was red lettering on white background and asking me to possibly do a check-up of my CPU but am uncertain was a CPU check up add. At youtube was playing music and the add was present till went to stop the add. Google popup then appeared and gave three choices. Can’t remember the choices offered by google. Add was strange and that is best can do with the memory, at this point. If remember anything else will get back to you.

another bit of interest as am remembering. I did not go to thread that has been listed as threat by google to the best of my knowledge. My problem began at Youtube tonight with the add. Google pops up and gives me three choices when attempt was made to eliminate the add. Chose top choice and sent to google. Within 15 seconds receive another popup that appeared to be Microsoft sent informing me internet connection has been lost. Have seen this maybe two or three times in the last couple of months and has been incorrect. Internet was still connected. ‘x’ out upper right each time and internet connection was working because was here at FR and continued to browse, post, etc without disruption and have continued to this point after ‘x’ out of last dialog box without any problem(s).
