A trade group representing the fast-growing electronic cigarette industry is contesting a new government study that claims the largely unregulated products lead teens on a path to tobacco cigarette smoking.
The American Vaping Association blasted this weeks study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), describing the assertion as plain deceptive and calling for the papers retraction.
The industry posits that e-cigarettes can actually help smokers quit, though they are prohibited from marketing the devices as a cessation tool.
There is no evidence e-cigarettes are gateways to smoking, and in fact, for millions of Americans they are anti-tobacco protects, said Gregory Conley, the associations president.
The CDC report, issued earlier this week, found that more than 263,000 young people chose e-cigarettes when smoking for the first time last year, a threefold increase from 2011.
The vaping group, however, takes exception with the CDCs assertion that young people who use e-cigarettes are twice as likely to say theyre inclined to try conventional cigarettes than those who dont.
An analysis of the study concluded that teens who said they would probably not try cigarettes were counted as likely future smokers, the association said.
Even worse, the CDC failed to disclose this in its press release, which led to hundreds of news sources identifying e-cigarettes as a gateway to cigarettes, Conley said.
forgive me, but as someone who uses them in VERY public spaces, I cry foul......
To the CDC police:
I use Mark 10 e-cigs. They are next to my Ruger 38 special with red laser so I won’t miss the target. Leave my Mark 10 alone!
Allergic to water vapor, are you? That is all that comes from the e-cig and it dissipates in a few seconds.
You can always tell the direction of the wind at a train station. The smokers all go upwind to get out of each others smoke. Of course that inundates the non smokers, but who cares?
I hope the nanny state does something about the over use of stinky perfumes next, and then b-o. As long as we’re stuck with them, we might as well get something out of it.
Reno, you joined August 1 and are right away nasty. Perhaps you should find another website instead of this one.
“Lol. You are wrong ...”
Yes, Reno is a newbie as of this month and wants to force people to live his/her way. I see a short future here for Reno. He/she should perhaps go join the Democrat life police.
Oh please. My sister is the biggest anti smoker in the world. I was able to vape freely in her home. In fact she really liked the smell. HARMLESS!!!
Get over it.
“Smokers dont realize just how much they stink and how much they stink up everything else around them.”
E-cig users are NOT smoking. I smell lovely, Trafari perfume, not sure about your smell but your “people control” issue is showing and it stinks.
You’re a kook.
I smoked my e-cig all the way from Ohio to Southern CA. I did use my shoulder wrap over my face like I was resting and vaped away
Good for you. I’ve used my e-cig around people who hate smoking and they never had a clue.
40 some years for me, too. I haven’t had a cig. in three years and enjoy my e-cigs.
Is there a “Vapers’ Ping List?”
Is there a Vapers Ping List?
I haven’t seen one but it would be nice to have one.
I use 24 mg/ml juice and will taper down to 18, 16, etc. while using a non-nicotine juice just for the added flavor.
My battery charger conked out and I couldn’t find one locally so I had to order one on line. After three days all my batteries dies so I had to purchase the disposable e-cigs, It was awful because the taste was bad and they didn’t last long and were expensive. Now I have 3 chargers. LOL
Pro Vape is my supplier. How about you?
The question the CDC needs to answer is how many of those young people would have smoked regular cigs if the vapor cigs weren’t available? I would bet nearly all.
Really? I quit smoking 8 years ago, chewing Nicorette gum, but there are 2 people in my family who use E-cigs, one of them is my daughter. I am thankful there was a viable alternative to cigarettes for her. When she exhales I can sometimes see the vapor but it never has an odor or any kind of fume to it that would cause one to cough. What exactly makes it disgusting (repulsive or sickening)to you?
Call me weird but I like the smell of smoke. When I can detect it on someone’s clothing or whatev I can get a hankering for one myself...not about to let all my quit work go down the drain though...
I’ve been quit for 8 or so years and chewing the nicotine gum the whole time. I’m to the point I constantly have a piece in my mouth. Pretty addicted to the darn stuff. DO you think a switch to an E-cig would be of any benefit?
>> “ in fact, for millions of Americans they are anti-tobacco protects,
And here you have the crux of the issue. The e-cig people are peeing in the cornflakes of multiple really powerful groups, including Big Tobacco, Big Pharma, and Big Government. They aren’t going to let their cigarette gravy train take a big hit from e-cigs without a fight.
It wouldn’t hurt. And you could taper off because the “juice” comes in different strengths. I want to quit altogether and need to start tapering off.
I would recommend you find a place where you can look at what’s available rather than shop on line. Some Malls have e-cig Kiosks. Then after you find what you like you can get your supplies on line at the best price.
Good luck!
Some disposable e-cigs are made by the tobacco companies.
