#9 – Petula Clark: “I Couldn’t Live Without Your Love”

Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent were the equals of Hal David and Burt Bacharach, although the Hatch-Trent partnership lasted fewer years. Just as Hal and Burt used Dionne Warwick as the chief vehicle for their songs, Tony and Jackie used Petula Clark. This is one of their best, with a great, catchy D Major opening that perfectly sets up what is to come.

The video is a nostalgic look at Los Angeles and other cities. The photo of the two-car trolley is a rare color shot of two 1907 Jewett center-entrance cars running on one of the Red Arrow lines out of Upper Darby, PA. By World War II, Brill Master Units, Brilliners and St. Louis PCC cars would replace the Jewetts.
