President Barack Obama's message to Russian President Vladimir Putin when traveling to Europe next week is to not "even think about messing around" with the Baltic states, the White House said Friday.
Obama is traveling to Europe next week for a meeting in Wales with other NATO leaders. He'll also make a stop in Estonia, where he will meet with the leaders of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in an attempt to reassure allies amid burgeoning Russian aggression in Ukraine.
"The two stops are essentially part of the same effort to send a message to the Russians that their behavior is unacceptable," Charles Kupchan, the White House's senior director for European affairs, said in a conference call with reporters Friday afternoon.
"You have in Estonia a large Russian population, and therefore part of the message that the President will be sending is, we stand with you. Article 5 constitutes an ironclad guarantee of your security. Russia, dont even think about messing around in Estonia or in any of the Baltic areas in the same way that you have been messing around in Ukraine."

It’s a joke.
Obama is the weak one, not the US military...
Remember, a few years back when Obama warned a Congressman : “Don’t call my bluff!” ?
I don’t remember who Obama said it to, but Rush talked about it a lot.
BTW, just what is the difference between Obama’s bluff and his red line?
Putin is messing around with the Baltics.
Riga, Latvia found Russian planes and naval vessels near their capitol today
well he ain’t got no beautiful wife.
Thank goodness Obama is more “flexible” now that he got Reelected.
Now he’s giving Putin ideas.
For the sake of argument, let's assume Russian tanks roll into all three Baltic states. Then what?
Would Obama and NATO start a strategic bombing of Russian targets? Would they mass tanks on the Polish border, and then strike towards Moscow? Would they risk a Third World War for the Baltics?
Or would Obama and NATO declare some sort of military blockade of Russia, and then leave it at that?
I'm betting it would be the latter option. Putin wins, and NATO falls apart, just like the old League of Nations did.
There is a powerful lesson here. Do not make treaty promises that you can't keep or won't keep.
There is no “powerful lesson here”, you can’t describe a vast military fantasy and then pretend that it happened, and then start posting the “lessons” from it, all in a matter of seconds.
President WANDA Hussein Sykes talkin’ smack, but thinkin’ about Baltic golf courses.
Russia can have 100% of the Baltics in 24 hours if they want, The Baltics exist to serve Russia now.
Take Ukraine, but leave Baltics alone.
Why not? If my conclusions are wrong, I'd love to hear why they are wrong. I do find it curious that you feel it's wrong to discuss hypotheticals in the first place.
Thanks, but your fantasies don’t interest me.
Then don’t read them, unless you are driven to demean every post you disagree with. Good night.
Don’t read them? You posted it to me.
You commented that the US military is far superior to the Russian military. Nothing I said was in disagreement with that. In fact, I agree with you. My point was that Obama (and NATO) would probably be unwilling to use military force to remove a hypothetical Putin thrust into the Baltic states. And that would cause NATO to fall apart.
I might be wrong. But I honestly don't understand why my post has upset you so much.
I will now say good night again.
Just go back and read your post 66 and my post 67, rather than play mind games with yourself and pretend that I am “upset”, I’m just not interested in your fantasies.

I continue to be confused by your attitude here. I can only conclude that you do not like to discuss outcomes based on hypothetical situations. And that is your right. Or perhaps you do not like how I word things, and again that is your right.
I will do my best to avoid posting to you in the future. But I cannot make any promises, as I already have so many other things to remember.
If you wish the last word here, you may have it.
Post 67 said it all, I can’t believe you are making so much of this, I’m not interested in spending time discussing your wild scenarios and fantasies.
Putin to White House: Why the hell not? Seriously.
ROFLMAO!
