Dealing Honestly with ‘White Privilege’: What do people mean when they evoke the term?
Pajamas Media ^ | 08/27/2014 | Walter Hudson

Recently, Megyn Kelly and Bill O’Reilly clashed over the notion of “white privilege,” debating the root cause of statistical disparities between white and black Americans. The Blaze summarizes:

Among the facts Kelly shared is that black unemployment in Ferguson is three times what it is for whites and that a black child in the U.S. is four times more likely to live in a poor neighborhood than a white child.

While O’Reilly didn’t dismiss these figures, he said that “families, culture and personal responsibility” are the real issues at hand.

But Kelly didn’t agree that O’Reilly’s assessment addressed the full picture.

“It’s not just families or culture,” she said. ”Look at that stat about the black children four times as likely to live in poor neighborhoods as white children, and in the St. Louis area there is documented white flight … the whites take off, these become black neighborhoods. The schools they get forgotten and the black population feels forgotten, Bill.”

Whether Kelly intended it or not, she echoed a disturbing premise which carries demeaning paternalistic overtones. Consider, why should an exodus of white people leave blacks destitute? Are we not speaking of adults? Are we blacks not endowed with the same human capacity to conceive of values and pursue happiness? To speak of blacks as “forgotten” is to speak of us like children lost at the mall, wholly incapable of assuming responsibility for ourselves. In this way, “white privilege” seems to mean productive capacity, and those wielding the phrase seem to argue that blacks have none.

“and in the St. Louis area there is documented white flight … the whites take off, these become black neighborhoods. The schools they get forgotten and the black population feels forgotten, Bill.””

These schools continue to get about $13,000 a year per student, it just feels like they’ve been forgotten.

Yet, there are many private schools that get by with just $6000 a year per student, and they don’t feel “forgotten” by anyone.

The only thing “forgotten” is that the students “forget” to study.

Funny the amount of work, testing, performance evals, etc I’ve had to go through just to keep my “white privilege”.

That term, along with racist, homophobia, etc are in the (really large) set of words that liberals obviously never have looked up in a dictionary.

It’s time to tell liberals to shove their silly little uneducated ideas up their collective community organizing Obamaholes.

And do it with an attitude that guarantees that if they don’t do it, we’ll help them.

Being nice will no longer work.

When it comes down to basics, it is that the majority of Caucasians have responsibility, work ethics, and at least some morality.

A large number of blacks do not....

That’s Megyn Kelly. She’s a solicitor. Research isn’t her long suit.

Maybe it could be the fact that 73% of all black children grow up in a house without a father?

Maybe it’s because blacks left the Church, black women keep opening their legs and having kids with deadbeats, and that the entire culture who brought us Gospel, Motown, and Jazz is now better known for ‘Cop Killer’ style rap.

In the 80’s black culture was morphing toward Kid and Play, and that was OK. Ice-T and Ice Cube (cool, like Fonzie) were trying to cross over and become legitimate actors.

It’s because the entire culture there is still ‘Pimps up, Ho’s down’ and until that changes, blacks are going to be living in their own filth.

Here’s a tip for Megyn - start reporting black on black crime on a regular basis and she’ll probably start getting it.

You can’t spend enough, apologize enough, or make enough affirmative action spots available to combat self-hatred. She should interview Bill Cosby, and get his take on it. O’Reilly is right - personal responsibility.

I saw the BO talking points yesterday where he talked about only 51% of blacks graduate from High school and something like 57% are raised by single parents. If those percentages are correct, then NO WONDER the black population is so freakin’ effed up. What you got then is this whole swath of the black population broke and desperate, who can’t get jobs so what happens? They turn to crime. And like BO said, instead of the black leadership focusing on that, what do they focus on instead? The blame game - Telling these blacks it is not their fault, it is all whiteys fault which does nothing but encourage them even more to commit more crimes. This piece of rat filth Sharpton, look at the message that sc*mbag put out - If you rob a store and beat a cop it is not your fault, you have every right to rob a store and attack a cop. And if that ain’t bad enough, we even got the POTUS putting out that message!

White privilege is just the latest attempt to explain and excuse the continuing gap in outcomes for various groups, after 50 years of government programs have failed to make a dent in many disparate outcomes.

It’s sort of like institutional racism, amorphous and vague and very useful when objective measures continually fail to give the desired results.

What a ditz Megyn Kelly turned out to be. She belongs on MSNBC.

Well in this case it is obvious that O'Reilly has the better argument.

That being said, O'Reilly lines up with this forum 80% of the time at most. I think Megyn would outscore him using that measure. She is way, way ahead in the legal department and is certainly a superior interviewer. Plus she has much better guests.

Of course I'm no O'Reilly fan. But I like Megyn. And she's way better than Hannity. Plus she's cute. That always helps.

Megyn Kelly needs to read Thomas Sowell.

Thomas Sowell has written about how, at one time, black families were arguably MORE stable and secure than many whites....they were homes with fathers who worked, mothers who cared for children and were not dependent on government.

I don’t care WHAT race you are, if you think you are a victim of “the man” and don’t get your mind out of that LIE, then you’ll be perpetually poor....economically, socially, spiritually.

I have family members who are NOT black who are just as “victimized” as any black urban youth you know....they blame everything bad that happens to them on someone other than their own poor choices.

By contrast, I work with a “person of color” every day who is responsible, cares for his wife and kids, even was a small business owner at one time. He doesn’t blame every problem on “the man”.

So I reluctantly side with the blowhard O’Reilly—who is NOT conservative, by the way.

The numbers Megan Kelly was quoting may be statistically true but the raw numbers may not explain all the issues.

For example, the dropout rate is an envelope number. It does not differentiate between those who had to leave school before graduation and those who elected to leave school before graduation. The bulk are those who elected to leave school.

Another number the MSM loves is the number of white cops in Fergason. They imply Fergason doesn't hire qualified black candidates.

This assumption ignores factors like local candidates may not meet basic requirements for example being a high school graduate or passing a physical fitness or drug test.

Spend a few minutes with a military recruiter and see how those problems permeate the youth candidate pool.
