An American man, believed to be fighting alongside Islamist militants in Syria, has been killed, the White House has confirmed.
A cousin of Douglas McCain told the BBC the US government called his mother to confirm his death on Monday.
McCain was found dead by Free Syrian Army fighters after a battle at the weekend, according to NBC.
The US government believes a small number of Americans have travelled to Syria to fight for extremist groups.
Senior US officials told broadcaster CNN Mr McCain was fighting for Islamic State (IS), which now controls large areas of Iraq and Syria. [snip] McCain was born in the US state of Minnesota and had moved to California with family

In fact, I heartily encourage all Islamic Jihadists worldwide currently cowardly hiding within the USA and other western nations borders, to do their solemn Islamic Jihadist duty, and go right now to the middle east, where their goal of collectively forming an Islamic Caliphate is finally about to come to fruition!
If they don't “jihad” themselves to the fullest in Mecca and Medina, they are all just cowardly apostates!
Does that make me an ISIS/ISIL supporter?
totally agree. by the way, who really gives a rat’s axe if he got greased? certainly not me.
Good comments after the article. One says that Sharpton and Jackson should go over to Iraq and protest the killing of that fine young upstanding yute. Next says one less dem voter, although someone else will no doubt use his name to vote early and often.
LOL, yep, first thing I thought of too?
Here’s hoping he was gutshot and suffered a good long time. Too bad no one posted pictures of his carcass, as a warning to others. We get decapitation videos but nothing we can celebrate, like a moron jihadist getting his just desserts. Can one contribute to free Syrians, to aid them in cleansing the gene pool of jihadist scumbags?
Marvelous. One less anti-American to deal with. I hope he took some more America haters with him.
Mix those words up? Not a chance. I cannot comprehend for a second how anyone could possibly mix up two such, such, such, diametrically-opposed, worlds-apart, polar opposites as those.
If you play the "word association" game with any American who's paid close attention to current events, and you threw at them the phrase, "Allahu Akbar!" - why, I'll just betcha 99% of them without a nanosecond's hesitation would respond, "Peace and Love!"
Arm them all, let them fight it out, and ban all travel to and from the Mid-East and North Africa.
But still. It’s good to know.
Fighting for ISIS is like fighting for Putin; it’s simply un-American. And I hope those who take up arms for ISIS die regardless of where they’re from.
Rep Duncan Hunter (jr) suggested today stopping ALL visa issuance from the entire Mid East for now , until we can assess “what is going on “ . Great idea .
I would add to that , intense interrogation of ANY American , and especially profiled ones , coming in on flights that could have been anywhere near an international jihad fight , should be held as ‘enemy combatants’ and sent straight to Guantanamo .
and I know many FRprs will have other suggested remedies , but I am trying to suggest something that might actually be put into practice
Family Of American Fighting For ISIS Killed Speaks Out: 5 Things We Know About Douglas McCain
That quote caught my attention, as well. Sometimes the relatives should just shut up and we’d never know how idiotic they are in their explanations for their family’s misdeeds.
Entire Middle East? Stupid idea. There's a countless number of Americans working in the petroleum industries, civilian military support, etc. who travel regularly to the region for various lawful and productive reasons. We don't need knee-jerk reactions to a small number of isolated events.
Old quote that my Grandma liked:
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt".
A favorite around these parts.
