Hunger and panic are spreading among people unable to work because of restrictions aimed at containing the spread of Ebola in Liberia and Sierra Leone, say church workers in West Africa.
In Liberias capital, Monrovia, church groups are trying to get food and distribute it to families who have asked us to help, but movement is heavily restricted and there is little we can do, Salesian Father Jorge Crisafulli, provincial superior in West Africa, said in an Aug. 22 telephone interview from Accra, Ghana.
Neighborhoods in Monrovia have been sealed off under terms of the government-imposed state of emergency.
The World Health Organization has estimated that more than 2,600 people in West Africa have been infected with Ebola since March. More than 1,400 people have died from the virus.
Food prices in Liberia are rising steeply and people are hungry, Father Crisafulli said, noting that markets in the city that are usually bustling are now empty and no trading is happening.
People are unable to get to work and, while they still have to buy food, they have no money because they cant work, he said.
There is great fear of spread of disease where there are large groups of people, he said.
Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea are the countries mainly affected by the current Ebola outbreak.
Particularly in Liberia, Ebola has become an economic and social problem as well as a health problem, Father Crisafulli said, noting that panic and fear are now greater problems than the disease itself.

Too bad panic has no nutritional value.
Then again, maybe they can make panicakes.
Do you ever post anything that isn’t from Catholic Review?

Why is that?
Care to answer?
“The Last Ship” is doing a pretty interesting take on what would happen here in the US given much the same conditions (a massive Hot Zone outbreak).
I’m not too sure that we wouldn’t react in a far worse fashion than what seems to be an understandable panic from folks who were living on the bare edge.
But, all things considered, would one rather be in a “red” or a “blue” city should something like this happen?
Sounds like a great vacation spot.
Who cares. He contributes. Isn’t that what its all about?
Neither. I’d rather be in a red rural area.
Take notes and learn lessons before it comes to your door. Prep now for this and any other emergency.
prep ping a ling.
A bit of hell on earth for these people. It must be terribly difficult for them to understand. Starvation or Ebola or both. I understand their panic and anger but they must be quarantined. They also must be fed. Their nonfunctional government is to blame but what’s blame worth when the slum dwellers are dying? My prayers for those affected and those trying to help.
Preppers’ PING!!
Hat Tip to bgill for the heads-up.
“Neither. Id rather be in a red rural area.”
Rural means red, for the greatest part.
But, yes. And already a part of the local clan you’ll survive with.
On your own? You’re toast.
I care.
What if he's just using us to advertise his site?
He doesn't give a damn about Free Republic, he just wants hits.
You're just fine with that?
Ping.
I come to freerepublic to read stories like this.
I’ve corresponded with an individual on FB who lives there. Quarenteen prohibits bring food in, hunger is rampant and eventually starvation with the associated additional diseases will end up killing more than the ebola virus.
Too bad you had to click offsite to read it then.
It never occurred to you to wonder why?
Like maybe some mook was directing traffic toward someplace with a headline you like?
Is that scam so effective that you don't even see it?
I hope the West will step up and send in food/supplies (if they're not already).
If the article is OK, yeah...I am fine with that. I PAY Free republic every quarter. I would never pay for his stuff.
And I think I will go click on his site just for yucks now.
There's 9 paragraphs here, and you don't have to go elsewhere to get the gist of the story.
People also post stuff from HuffPO... that doesn't mean they're trying to promote HuffPo.
