My father was at Fort Lee in from the summer of 1961 until about October of 1963. He was a computer programmer, and was involved in the commissioning of the SAGE air-defense node located on that base. It was located in a very recognizable building: a large concrete cube about six stories high on the outside (and somewhat less than six stories high on the inside).
We lived in Petersburg. I attended first grade in the Dinwiddie County public school. I went to a Catholic school for second grade, and a week or two of third.
I would love to make a trip to Petersburg. I probably should since I’m not really that far away. Dad was there for two years and hated every minute of the Army. LOL Back then men felt it was their duty to enlist, no matter what. It was hard but it made men out of them.
