Dr. Sandeep Jauhar is mad as hell. American health care is in upheaval. On one side, overhead and malpractice insurance costs keep increasing, while salaries stagnate. On the other, patients believe that expensive drugs are better, more people are on government-run insurance that pays less, while private insurance fights every claim. Now doctors spend most of their time trying to game the system, requiring endless paperwork, protracted bureaucratic battles and treadmill medicine, seeing as many patients as possible in as little time. This problem will only intensify as millions join the ranks of the insured under the Affordable Care Act.

As a physician, I appreciated in 2010 that if you’re not an EMPLOYEE you are marked for death under Obamacare. Doctors as EMPLOYEES will have more regular hours and greater protection, but will deliver sub-par care more often. BTW, newly trained doctors are lemmings who accept the new mediocrity and often vote Marxist.
bump
Until this is made illegal by the liberals.
Your wife is a very smart lady! ;)
my mom has her own practice(internal medicine) & her hours on paperwork has increased since Obamacare.

Boy I am not seeing it. As a referral source I see a lot of private pay and high end insurance folks who are frustrated and want out of the corporate game.
This is what happens when we allow the government to intrude where it does not belong. Government has been trying to socialize medicine for years, probably since the onset of Medicare/Medicaid, and at first the system as it existed could absorb the increased cost and red-tape that necessarily resulted. I think we are beyond the point of no return now, though.
Medicine is being forced to be responsible for what are no longer medical problems but societal ones. Bleeding-heart liberals declared ‘insane asylums’ cruel and abusive to those who could not function in society. Instead of finding a way to make them effective and humane, they closed them down, forcing these homeless, non-functional, addicted souls onto the streets, which somehow to the liberals seems more humane, because at least these people have their ‘freedom’. These people then end up in emergency rooms throughout the country, where hospitals/medicine are expected to deal with them because society doesn’t want to.
Drunks are brought by ambulance to the ER because they were found sleeping on the street and the police don’t want the work and liability associated with them. Once there, they have to be monitored and literally ‘policed’ by hospital staff who should be taking care of sick people for fear that they will fall in the hospital, or leave and fall outside, opening the hospital up to all manner of liabilities. Of course they don’t go to the county hospital down the block, because they have a ‘right’ to be brought to the private hospital. So when you bring grandma in to be seen for chest pain, she may get a stretcher next to the local drunk homeless schizophrenic. And who do you think pays for this?
In order to remedy the imaginary societal problem of ‘unequal access’ to private medical insurance and private medical care, state hospitals and clinics were declared ‘not good enough’ to take care of the uninsured and under-insured because much of the care was by residents and students from various teaching programs. Teaching hospitals across the country were unable to serve the people they set out to help because Federal regulations mandate that care by residents (who are licensed physicians, by the way) could no longer be performed without a staff physician holding their hands. This drastically reduces the number of patients that can be treated, so now patients get NO care instead of what some bureaucrat deemed was ‘not good enough’ care. Not to mention the effect it has on physician training and experience.
Dialysis, chemotherapy, AIDs drugs, etc. are provided at no cost to patients who continue to actively use drugs, miss clinic appointments, and end up back in the ER for even more expensive care because of their non-compliance. No ‘death panels’ for these patients, but bring them on for those who actually pay their bills.
All of this in the face of threats of lawsuits, loss of medicare/medicaid payments, and the dreaded ‘bad patient satisfaction report’. Is it any wonder that doctors who actually want to take care of patients are abandoning ship? Hospitals are holding on by abandoning the idea that patient care is the goal, and they still believe they can ‘game the system’ enough to stay in business, but I think their time is coming, too. There is no longer a way to win the game, they just haven’t figured that out yet.
If something drastic doesn’t happen soon to change things, there is going to be a complete breakdown of the health care system. That may actually be what has to happen before we can rebuild it as it should be again, completely independent of government interference. I’m not completely pessimistic, I do believe that will happen. It is just going to a very painful process, and unless it starts pretty soon, I don’t think I’ll be sticking around to participate.
Whew, that was a little more than my usual 2 cents. :)
O2
sorry but I personally have never experienced that "assembly line" service you claim.........
Could it be that you have an axe to grind against the medical community? If so, maybe you could get your medical treatment in Canada.........
As a side note, google MRI facilities and waiting times in Ontario and compare the results to S.E. Michigan.......
After that, google "Thorasic Surgeons" in Ontario and compare the results to S.E. Michigan............
Then compare the entire socialist medical system in Canada and compare it to the United States..........
Sorry Soul of the South but your bitch isn't against our superior medical profession, (which you were vague in your complaint) but rather your government which is controlling them out of private practice........
FYI-my sister, a hard core Socialist, blames all this on the insurance companies(one of the FEW things she doesn’t blame on GWB). She is sure that it will get much better when the Government is in charge of everything. I rarely talk to her anymore.
That seems fraudulent.
My SIL just got out of a VA hospital after a 3 day stay. His doctor made it by once/day, not twice. The only visit that lasted over 2 minutes was when my wife (an RN) and I were there. That came after she asked why the patient hadn’t been seen for over 24 hours, and when was the doctor going to make his rounds.
My wife quit as a nurse when patient loads went from 4 to 6, with a roughly 50% increase in acuity, and the hospital got angry because she was putting in overtime. She said the “successful” nurses were the ones on her floor who filled in their paperwork BEFORE visiting the patient. That way, if they were interrupted, their paperwork showed them complete.
She then went to work in a rehab place. The first week, she asked why 20 drugged rehab patients were being wheeled into rehap, one or two were given some rehab for an hour while the rest dozed on, drugged in their wheelchair, but all 20 were shown as having done an hour of rehab. The second week, she was fired.
The state licensing boards have the docs by the cajones. If the docs don’t follow the law, they lose their license to practice. I see banning of private practice coming. Stay healthy, FRiends.
An interesting turn across the past 50 years of the Medicare era. My mom, a career RN, used to tell stories of most of the physicians in our town being Birchers. Most of the predictions she carried home from them in that time have now come to pass.
I have no idea what point you are trying to make here. Are you saying that Obamacare is the answer to whatever complaint your wife seems to be making?:
As a side note, over the past 6 years, I have been to two rehab facilities and have never experienced the account your wife seems to be trying to imply...........
Nothing personal but it sounds to me like your wife just may have an axe to grind given her perpensity for not being able to hold a legitimate nursing position for any length of time.
Her personal complaints do not jive with all the nurses and medical professionals I happen to know........
Just sayin........
If private, what was the average daily patient flow? If hospital, I would ask the same question........
Your doctor charges medicare for an extended visit and sees you for tow minutes.
In 1982, Hospitals were told that doctors had been ripping off medicare to the extent that it was bankrupt and that patients were actually going to have to shorten hospital stays and that the governmnet would be in charge of that, overseeing the insurance industry who would make the call.
No, let’s go back to the inception of medicare and government insurance, lest any one think that the government getting into health care is from obamacare. No.
And insurance has jumped on the overpricing wagon.
Now look at how your doctor doesn’t mind letting you know he is ripping off the government. All the excuses and rationale point to the same mentality as that of the looters in Furguson. It’s ‘free’ because it is owed to us. Doctors do the same thing.
Over 60 years.
Now, medicine in this country says it’s the best.
THe best what?
It thrives on sick people. it operates on pharmaceuticals and testing equipment.
It’s funded by insurance companies, private and government, and overseen by doctors who historically and provably have no clue how to manage administration nor economics.
Now it is not only bankrupt but running up exorbitant bills.
Four patients at a local university hospital yesterday I saw. All four had private rooms. THe new architectural planning for these places state that private rooms are best for whatever. giving into the breakdown in society, not even a four bed room. People cant get along.
These four people, all in their ‘50s, and early sixties. two have cirrhosis, one has a head injury, another is 600 pounds, three are on morphine. One is screaming that the dialysis is not being initiated quickly enough.
None have jobs. None have visitors none have families none have jobs.
They’re in there fro a week, two are on their way to institutional homes where they will continue screaming for benefits, and complain about the lack of immediacy. They cost the medical industry about ten thousand a day give or take a few thousand.
They are on enormous amounts of pharmaceuticals.
They are being paid and treated like gold for having spent their lives abusing themselves.
None of them has worked in many years.
Anyone with a stich of sense common to an eight year old could tell you this system would run out of money
Take any hospital unit. It is not a healing environment. regardless of the economics, doctors and the system do not operate to heal, to fix the situation, to prevent disease nor to allow the patient to have any part of it.
It is NOT a good system, and very soon it will be out of borrowing power. Obama took advantage of it, but his system was too idiotic.
americans don’t eat right, they are on pharmaceuticals and they don’t exercise.
The medical system operates best with that.
but it does not work.
And it is long out of money.
“I spend more time keeping insurance companies happy and trying to play medicare/medicaid games...”
If you just operate without them and their money, they’ll get off your case.
