Race Manners: Michael Browns death didnt cause a divide between you and the people in your social networks. It simply revealed one. Use the information youre getting to decide which relationships you value.
Dear Race Manners:
I have been so offended and angered by what some of my friends on Facebook have said about Michael Brown and the situation in Ferguson (he was a thug, he deserved it, black people destroy their own communities, blacks are criminals, all the police officers in Ferguson should quit because blacks dont appreciate them and more). I feel as though I dont know some of my former classmates. You would be shocked if I gave you the quotes, believe meso heartless and sometimes flat-out racist.
To be honest, my heart is already heavy for Michaels family and the Ferguson community and for the way we are seen and treated in this country, so sometimes I dont have the strength to respond, but Im both hurt and frustrated, not to mention angry. What to do? Anonymous
It's no surprise that you're seeing a racial divide in the reactions to what happened in Ferguson, Mo. A poll conducted by Pew showed that blacks are about twice as likely as whites to say that the shooting of Michael Brown "raises important issues about race that need to be discussed."
To be clearas plenty of people pointed out to me on Twitter when I shared those resultsthat doesn't mean that only nonwhite people care about Brown's death or are sensitive to the racial dynamics of this week's events in Ferguson, including the treatment of protesters in the predominantly black town by a militarized police force....

Jim, you’re white! And (**gasp**) a conservative. Face it, man, you’re a racist no matter WHAT!!!

This one appears to have a Cantina ... haven’t heard the band.
I avoid social media.
Until the black people in this country are ready to take responsibility for the bad behavior of their young people, the violence, disrespect for others, the gang-banging, gangsta’ rap mentality, disrespect for private property, knockout players, disregard for education, lack of appreciation for tax payers and their charity..., discussions about racism are idiotic and pointless. When all the black people who are ready for discussions of racism are ready to admit that they are racists, a good start can be made. Otherwise it’s just another opportunity for militant, self-pitying, people to practice their tired old rap.
As hives of scum and villainy go, this one’s not bad, but the band is awful.
Sounds like a good idea. :)
Ahh. Barry Soetero’s post-racial regime.
Sorry, wrong thread. I was replying to a thread that got pulled as I was typing.
no.
I have opted to not join Facebook despite the requests and suggestions of associates. As far as Twitter, I have never commented and am not a member but I do use it occasionally as a source for information. It can be useless among the clutter.
Nope, Lone Ranger, you've got Tonto here.
I don’t have a Facebook page, and I don’t Tweet. I don’t text, either.
It’s racism to be racist against the wrong race.
I’m paranoid of being commercially profiled, myself.
No, this is the only place in the World where I post anything.
I’m not racist. I hate a lot more whites than I do blacks, although that number has risen considerably since the obama came to power.
No, you’re not alone. No tweets or facebook here. No texting either.
LOL. That’s awesome.
I agree, fascination with social mediums are a good indicator of a person's intellectual development, or intellectual laziness. Most people who actually DO something in this world do not have either time or inclination to spend time on these things. Besides, they have enough social interaction during the day that they don't need more second hand meandering in their private time.
I don’t do either. . .you may want to listen to this at 7 p.m. Central time regarding future riots, etc.
I am old fashioned. My Facebook account has people I actually care about and some acquaintances. I refuse to comment or get dragged into fruitless, non-virtuous, unrighteous speech about this issue.
