It was a horrible idea to let ISIS know the details of a failed rescue mission. They will not be so careless again, and the other two US hostages will not survive.

I'd assume they already knew and it was either (1) planted info to flush out an informer or (2) the hostages were moved before the rescue
What I find deeply disturbing is the US has been arming, financing, and training "friendly rebels" even while it was ISIS that was benefitting. If the gov knew where hostages might have been, I'd assume our sources knew what a threat ISIS is.
Could the hostages have been saved if the US had allied with Assad instead of still trying to topple his government? Were the hostages captured and guarded with US weapons?
How bad can our government get?
Perhaps ISIS knew and that was the real reason Foley was slaughtered. Take it one step further. Perhaps the WH learned ISIS knew and released the details.
They need to be ahead of story.
