The latest Reason-Rupe poll finds that when it comes to kids and their trophies, 57 percent of Americans think only the winning players should receive them. Another 40 percent say all kids on a sport team should receive a trophy for their participation.
The desire for “every kid to get a trophy” strongly correlates with political beliefs. Fully 66 percent of Republicans want only the kids who win to receive trophies, while 31 percent say all kids on the team should receive them. In contrast, Democrats are evenly divided with 48 percent who say all kids, and another 48 percent who say only the winners should receive a trophy.
The competitive desire for winners to be rewarded correlates with fiscal conservatism. Among those who only think winners should get a trophy, 64 percent have a favorable view of capitalism, 64 percent thinks markets better solve problems than government, and 63 percent favor smaller government providing fewer services. In contrast, among those who think all kids should get a trophy, a plurality (49%) have an unfavorable view of capitalism, 50 percent thinks a strong government better solves problems than the free market, and 54 percent favor larger government providing more services.

This won’t sit well with those that believe kids should get a medal for participation.
And those Bozos In Oslo shouldn’t be giving out complimentary Nobel “Peace” Prizes to commie ‘RAT politicians just because of the color of their skin.

43% think kids should get awards for being there. That sort of matches the fools who voted for Clown Prince nobama who is, at best, being there. Complete, utter morons. They think meritocracy and personal achievement are crimes.

Frequently there’s no score kept these days in kid soccer games. No winners or losers at all.
As a coach for kids I’m amazed at the parents who spend NO time practicing with their child or even letting them practice and then who complain their brat isn’t getting enough playing time.
that 40% are the 40% that vote democrat no matter what. and also those who’s kids can’t get trophies for winning. big overlap there. next they’ll go to court to get a judge order their kids get a trophy for showing up.
It’s ALL about protecting the little darlings fragile self esteem. Because THAT will prepare them for the real world./sarc.
There is a large pct. of misguided Americans who believe kids are thrilled to get a trophy for merely participating. The truth is most kids over the age of five know full well that they’re getting a useless piece of trash. Like when I was about ten years old at the fair and I got some piece of junk for my lousy attempt at ringing the bell with the sledgehammer. I kept it in my room for about a year and then threw it out.

I had a friend who thought his boy was a budding superstar. He was a decent player, but I had to put up with my friend's guff about his superstar kid who got shafted by the coach. My friend was convinced his kid's high school coach didn't play him much because he was jealous of my friend's kid's ability. Yeah, sure.
I really hate being coerced into purchasing trophies for my children for their participation on teams. This year, my daughter played on a horrible team. It was horrible from the top down. I could not wait for the season to be over. I was team mom and tried to be positive and to do the things needed for the team. When it came time for an end of season party and trophy purchasing, I talked to the head of the league about what to do. Our coach had collected money for a tournament that was cancelled. He never returned the money. The league president said that we did not need to have a party nor did we need to buy trophies because he league was going to have a big bash and hand out participation trophies which were actually medals. I was happy with that. Then they did not have the league party. I maintained that I had no interest in trophies, and six more parents agreed. Well, I found out the other day that the other parents bought trophies anyway and that my daughter’s trophy was in the possession of one of the other parents. Lol. Crazy people. What a waste! The mom who has my daughter’s trophy has two more.
We have a lot of trophies for participation from our oldest boys. Our youngest boys are now collecting the same. Our youngest son’s team won the league regular season and earned a real trophy. Then they won the season ending tournament and received another trophy. So for one season, he has three trophies and a few game balls. The trophy companies around here make a killin on these crazy people.
I ran a marathon, and got a ribbon for finishing. That seemed just.
I have no problem with all kids who participate getting something to recognize their participation. Any special recognition awards, though, should only be awarded to the kids who earn them by excelling in their efforts.
I coached pee wee basketball when my sons came through elementary school in a city recreation department league. The director played up the “this should be fun” angle, and I agree to a point.
However, it was my point of view that a team sport like basketball taught life skills that everyone would do well to learn, like working together toward a goal, cooperation, and how to succeed and fail with class.
So, at the first practice I told them two things:
First, I told them that if the only reason they were playing basketball was to have fun, they would be better off staying home and playing Nintendo.
Second, I told them that I would only support giving trophies if the team won first or second place. For any other case, I told the parents they could get together and give trophies, but I would not participate in it because a trophy in that case would be meaningless.
One year, my oldest son’s team got third place. The parents wanted to give trophies. I gave money to buy my son a trophy so he would not appear left out. He knew when he got it that I was giving him the option to keep it or throw it away because it meant nothing. He understood, and threw it away on his own. He is a better man for it and went on to be a decent HS basketball player, and a pretty darn good HS QB, setting the school record for starts at QB for a pretty large HS with a successful program. He head is screwed on pretty straight compared to most in their early 30’s. . . and better yet, he is a very informed, strong conservative!!!!!
