Column defending cops in Ferguson sparks online fury
WXMI-TV / CNN ^ | August 20, 2014

In a single column, a veteran police officer has catapulted himself into the national debate over the death of unarmed teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

“I’m a cop. If you don’t want to get hurt, don’t challenge me,” the Washington Post headline blares. The piece was written by Sunil Dutta, a 17-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Even though it might sound harsh and impolitic, here is the bottom line: if you don’t want to get shot, tased, pepper-sprayed, struck with a baton or thrown to the ground, just do what I tell you,” he wrote.

Dutta cautions against arguing, insulting, or screaming at officers, “and don’t even think of aggressively walking towards me. Most field stops are complete in minutes. How difficult is it to cooperate for that long?”

If you believe an officer is violating your rights or bullying you, Dutta says, don’t challenge him then — save that for lodging a complaint later. “Do what the officer tells you to and it will end safely for both of you.”

It took no time for the anger over his message to explode.

“The outrageous thing is not that he says it. The outrageous thing is that we accept it,” writes Ken White of the blog Popehat, which tracks American legal issues.

“Do we have a justice system? By name, yes. Is it effective in deterring cops from abusing citizens or punishing them when they do? No… If you hope the cop will be charged criminally for misbehavior, you’re going to be waiting a very long time for no result.”(continued)

I hate the protesters in Ferguson, but this cop is a bigger threat to my liberty.

How so?

Do you regularly go “Big Mike” on cops?

Because Dutta is speaking in terms of those type of actions.

Is Unarmed Teen a formal Title now that must be uttered every time the person is mentioned?

Personally I think the opinions of idiots like this cop are unworthy of wasting a lot of time on.

Instead I would like to see conservatives push a demand for Jay Nixon to retract and apologize for his idiotic statement about prosecuting Darren Wilson without benefit of trial. Let Nixon face the wrath of the mob he helped create.

I often hear of “a few bad cops” giving all the others a bad name. The question then becomes; “Why don’t the good cops, turn in the bad cops?” The only comparison, and I will be the first to admit that it is an unfair one, is to Islam.

We are always told of the radical 10% that are the trouble makers, but we never hear anything from the other 90%, that rebukes the actions of the minority.

Same holds true of police, no matter how poorly or illegally an officer has acted, his brothers and sisters in blue will NOT speak up against him.

Another impediment to cleaning up law enforcement is that when an officer is found guilty of misconduct, the tax payers and not the officer are on the hook for any costs. The officer may lose their job, but the tax payer foots the bill.

So what can we do to fix this situation? Well as my old First Sergeant used to say; “Don’t complain unless you have a solution to the problem.” Well here is my idea.

Any and all monetary damages awarded to a plaintiff as a result of the actions of law enforcement officers, are to ONLY come from the offending departments or organizations pension fund.

Only when it hits home personally by weakening every officers retirement, will the good ones begin to turn in the bad ones. In time, department phycologists and training officers will do a better job of weeding out the nut jobs. Senior staff will do a better job of triple checking addresses before conducting a “no-knock” late night call to a suspect’s home. Officers will advise their partners that a course of action is not advised, rather than just going along.

And once this has happened, law enforcement might begin to gain some of the mountain of trust and respect that they have lost in past few years.

If a street thug beats a cop and threatens his life and then charges back to threaten him sgain and gets himself killed in the process, too bad. This veteran police officer is trying to caution others not to follow suit.

I agree if he acted incorrectly.

And the rioters and looters are creating a bad image for the peaceful side of the protest.

The peaceful protesters need to get the situation under control and come out very clearly against the violence.

Also, there needs to be a trial with all evidence presented.

Actually, the correct narrative is “Unarmed black teenager executed by a white KKK cop”.

Note that in Nazi Germany those cops were working for the Central government.

This time it is the Central Government that opposes the local cops.

They “oppose” them because they want to replace them.

Oh yeah I understand that. I had a cop pull a gun on me once and arguing the constitution with him was about the last thing on my mind.

Because Dutta is speaking in terms of those type of actions. If you believe an officer is violating your rights or bullying you, Dutta says, don’t challenge him then...

That part sticks in my craw. For instance, I've often heard that you don't let them into your home or search your vehicle without a warrant. Doesn't "just do as I say" apply there?
