Easy. You KEEP SHOOTING UNTIL THE THREAT IS OVER.
I teach in my CCW class. Do not fire warning shots, do not fire maiming shots (unless necessary), AND NEVER, EVER DO YOU shoot "to kill". You shoot to live. Only shoot enought to stop the threat. Reload, re-evaluate, when safe call the police. And yes, the DO will ask you if you shot to kill. Your answer is, "No, I shot to live......
.....and "I was in fear for my life, that person tried to kill me, had to shoot in order to preserve my life (or an innocent 3rd party)
....and I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR INVESTIGATION OFFICER, BUY MY CHEST HURTS, I CANT BREATH, I NEED MEDICAL ATTENTION, AND I WILL MAKE ALL FURTHER STATEMENTS WITH MY ATTORNEY PRESENT!"
Great post. Hopefully all CCW instructors teach the same thing with abundant emphasis.

...good Lord... you guys win...sheesh...semantics...
...may I infer from your response that all the while you are shooting until the threat is over you are in fact shooting with lethal ammunition as directly as possible at the perp...?
I'm getting ready to take a CCW class. I hope I remember this if I'm not told. Great advice! Thanks!
Thank you for teaching people not only how to safely and effectively carry a firearm, but how to deal with the all-important aftermath in case the necessity arises of actually having to use their training. The shooting is not the end of it, not now, no matter what.
