We used S&W .38 revolvers as our department issued weapon. Lining up the front and back sights was fairly easy if you were standing still and firing at a still target. But anyone would have been dead, or close to it if they’d tried to line the sights up before firing while someone was charging at you. We also did combat stance shooting, but again, it was with a still target, and nowhere reflects what real combat firing would be like. We also trained with the AR-15, Remington shot gun, and gas gun. We used the revolvers on various duties outside of the facility, and when transporting inmates. The AR-15’s and shotguns were used on wall posts. The shot guns were also used on vehicle patrol, and fortunately, the gas guns were never used at any of the prisons I worked in over my 25 year career. We had to qualify each year to keep our Peace Officer status. This is in New York State prisons.

One of my neighbors is a former Detroit cop and says he never had to fire his weapon in the line of duty. He says he did draw several times in 11 years but only ever fired it on the range.

It is hard to listen to all the theorizing if you have been there. Armchair QB’s born every minute.
