Many of the principals of the July 20 plot ahd been posted to Kluge’s HQ at Army Group Center In Smolensk. Kluge knew of their activities, even though he did not directly participate. There was no way he was going to escape Freisler’s Volkshofgericht.
Kluge was a vacillating double-dealer. The best that can be said for him is he was a man of weak character who thought he was doing his duty.
