People living in countries with governments that spend more on social services report being more contented, according to a Baylor University study.
"The effect of state intervention into the economy equals or exceeds marriage or employment status -- two traditional predictors of happiness -- when it comes to satisfaction," said Patrick Flavin, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science in Baylor's College of Arts & Sciences. The study -- "Assessing the Impact of the Size and Scope of Government on Human Well-Being" -- is published in the journal Social Forces. The researchers analyzed data from 21 advanced industrialized countries in the World Values Survey from 1981 to 2007, with nearly 50,000 respondents.

And when these sheep realize they have to pay for it?
...and the US now has a majority parasite class. This class will grow and grow until it kills the host; the productive class. Then the whole system collapses. We're on the way. It's Detroit all the way down.
Could anyone be happier than the good people of North Korea?
Baylor University, where the study was done, seems to be going to hell in a hand basket. Strange, as it’s a private Baptist university in Waco, Texas
They missed a few words in the title. :-)
The study includes only rich countries in Europe, plus Japan and a few others, and the differences in indexes are rather slight. This is not a significant study.
The more checks (OK, direct deposits) you get every month, the more satisfied you are with givernment.
Below is a typical day at Baylor's College of Arts & Sciences:
I disagree. Large increases in government spending do make the majority of people happier... for a while. It's "free shit", or more politely, "services", that don't need to be paid for, at least in any obvious near-term way.
Of course, the bill always comes due, but it can take a generation (see Europe, and now the US).
Remember, this is a survey, and it's always a big party when you're eating the seed corn (i.e., living above your means).
Really...thing is today we have empirical evidence that socialism/communism doesn’t work. This is like poliing the inmates at a jail on which laws are fair or not. If one of these commie wannabes were intellectually honest they would move to Cuba or Venezuela tomorrow.
“You’re damn right they’re more satisfied!
Hey! You’re satisfied, aren’t you?”
“We love our government and wouldn’t want to live any other way.”
“See?”
I don’t know about CEO pay elsewhere, but for US you can Google “Forbes CEO compensation” and the year that interests you. A few years ago you could pull out data by industry, but I think in 2011 they got rid of that pro people feature and by spreading out the information made it harder to photocopy and compare data.

Well, comparing wages around the world is not relative due to cost of living variations. For example, here in the Philippines we (wife, child, and myself) spend about $1000 per month. That pays everything, including rent. In the US, that might get one by on skid row.
Like many people I am over 65 and have SS and Medicare. Also, there are many with veterans benefits like my husband before he died.
Your husband, he GAVE, didn’t “take.” :)

And some of those paying no tax are giant corporations. I was part of a recent research project. And we found for the region studied that the bottom 20% and top 1% of earners were paying between 6 and 7% in taxes. The middle 20% like me were paying the most—11%.
