AUSTIN Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Saturday that the indictment against him was an outrageous abuse of power and vowed to fight it.
This indictment amounts to nothing more than abuse of power and I cannot and will not allow that to happen, Perry said at a news conference on Saturday.
Perry spoke a day after a grand jury indicted the Republican on two felony counts of abuse of power for making good on a veto threat. He dismissed the prosecution as a farce.
A special prosecutor spent months calling witnesses and presenting evidence that Perry broke the law when he promised publicly to veto $7.5 million over two years for the Public Integrity Unit run by the office of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg.
Lehmberg, a Democrat, was convicted of drunken driving, but refused Perrys calls to resign.
The possible 2016 presidential hopeful is dismissing the charges as nakedly political. Perry is the first Texas governor since 1917 to be indicted.
The governor said he was absolutely correct in seeking Lehmbergs resignation, and given the chance to do it all over again, he would.
He predicted victory in the courts, and said that ultimately, the people who engineered the indictment will have a price to pay. Those responsible will be held accountable, Perry said.

I for one have emailed my state senator and rep to defrock the Travis County DA's office of persecutory powers of this nature, and transfer these powers to the Texas AG, where it belongs. Again our state is conservative enough, where I think this can be pulled off.
I am asking that all other Texas Freepers do the same. Tom Delay was a great conservative who fell victim to these tactics, only later after being ruined was cleared. Enough is enough!!!!!!!
The same Demorat political hacks in Travis County have in the past sought, and won, indictments of Kay Bailey Hutchinson while she was a sitting U.S. Senator, and House Majority Whip Tom Delay, as are now responsible for this farce.
Romney had nothing to do with any of it.
You lack information to put this in its real context.
Being “nuts” has nothing to do with it.
Trust the truth.
It’s absolutely a farce. God bless and protect Governor Perry.
Video here.
Public Integrity Unit run by the office of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg.
An oxymoron if there ever was one.
She acted incredibly childish. Typical lib.
“...Call me a conspiracy nut, but Romney is behind this...”
-
OK; You are a conspiracy nut.
Drunk as Cooter Brown. (Whoever he is.)
Folks this is the same thing Ronnie Earle did to Tom Delay....it took 3 or 4 Grand juries before he got the indictment and numerous years for Delay to clear himself....it’s what they do!!! Only difference is it’s another political hack instead of Earle!!!
Only with people who are right-of-center.
Democrats, on the other hand, see felonies on our side where none exist, and dismiss actual felonies on their side.
at least you know yourself - that’s a start
(good grief - what a stretch)
Let us identify these hacks. Find them, freeze them, personalize them, and take them down.
A move to ry to keep Perry off the 2016 ballot?
Even David Alexrod says the indictment is bogus (and will blow back on BO)
Good Lord.
The Dems are about to make a hero of a gutless, frat boy corrupt crony capitalist RINO.
Romney would have won if Perry was on his ticket. Of course Romney only surrounds himself with protege’ of him. It seems to work in the private sector but in the public sector......
In the last few days a small number of Guard have been deployed to Hidalgo County. They are there to man observation towers. The towers normally have equipment that can warn of suspicious river/border activity but do not have actual human eyes observing the scene. Now they do. The Hidalgo County officials say having humans there is better than mere equipment and they welcome it.
However, this is not part of Perry’s 1,000 Guard to the Border surge. That will begin as a trickle but build up over the next few weeks. That surge is intended to combat Narco-trafficking and other criminal element activity, that has increased because the Border Patrol has been overwhelmed with duties related to the surge of illegals from Central America that simply cross and walk up to agents and surrender.
I don’t know the exact rules of engagement the Guard will have. Rumors were they would include detention and arrest. The arrest part could not be confirmed but it appears they can detain someone while waiting for their disposition. Not saying they won’t “arrest”, but probably detain for local LE is just as good.
This not a mystery, TG.
We don’t have to wonder and hope and cast about in our imaginations about Perry “wavering” or not, or showing “backbone” or not, or “stepping up” or not.
We don’t have to set up straw men then wait to see if they get knocked down or not.
Perry has a record over many years of using Texas DPS and other resources to try to disrupt the criminal activity along the border. What has happened with the massive increase in illegals walking over the border and surrendering en masse is not Perry’s fault and he cannot stop it. But those border incursions have tied down resources that would otherwise be focused on criminal activities and the Guard presence is to ameliorate that.
THE GUARD WILL WORK CLOSEST OF ALL WITH LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT.
Perry’s record is available at his official website.
Numerous news stories are available on this latest use of the Guard and how it fits in.
However, the right President and Congress could completely change this Border travesty. It better not be Hillary or some other Dem, or a GOP RINO, and Congress better toss the totally failed “leaders” it has on the GOP side, and more Ted Cruz types must get there, or we are done.
