The unarmed black teen whose fatal shooting by police in a St. Louis suburb sparked violent protests was a suspect in a robbery moments before, but the deadly encounter was not sparked by the robbery, the city's police chief said Friday.
Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson earlier Friday released documents alleging 18-year-old Michael Brown had been suspected of stealing a $48.99 box of cigars from a convenience store in a strong-arm robbery shortly before he was killed.
Jackson said at an afternoon press conference that Brown and his friend were stopped Saturday because they were walking down the middle of the street blocking traffic.

Police Chief now says officer might have realized Michael Brown was robbery suspect

Police Chief is on video stating that he doesn’t know if the officer knew or not ..Things fall bad on the administrative side, the brass will cover themselves.
Of course it’s related. It shows that the innocent harmless guy is capable of brutality, as evidenced in the recording of his robbery and his bullying and threatening of a man half his size.
Why does it matter...unless the race pimps want to fall back on a charge of racial profiling? They are getting desperate.
I was listening to Fox last night and they had an 8:00 pm special program of, “The Five” broadcast in place of BOR who is on vacation. The show was discussing the death of Mr. Brown and Bill phoned in to join the discussion as it is, “so important”. I had to turn it off.
The contention is being made that the cop had no idea the robbery had taken place so he had no cause to shoot the 6’4” 290# “kid”. Not one of the panelists noted that the young Mr. Brown knew and would have been amped up to avoid or resist the police. BOR insisted we not make assumptions of any sort even though reports are the cop had to go to the hospital for facial trauma.
If only in an, “Official Setting” can facts be assessed, why even report on the news developments?
The police chief has TOTALLY BUNGLED this and has blood on his hands for not releasing that video days and days ago!! And IF the policeman had to go to the hospital THAT needed to be out there IMMEDIATELY!!
It may have made a big difference in how Brown reacted to being stopped by a cop. If he thought he was being stopped and arrested for strong-arm robbery, he may have decided he did not want to go to jail and to fight instead.
I really have no idea what happened here, but the more pieces of the puzzle that come out, the more it is making sense... I did hear one spent shell was found inside the car, so it does appear the shooting started there... Whether or not the cop had any idea of the kid being a suspect or not, the kid, new he had just robbed the place and probably assumed the cops were looking for him, when the cop pulled up, it would seem reasonable to assume the kid thought the cop was coming about the robbery and I would assume the fight/flight is kicking in so he can keep his freedom a bit longer... Given that guess, the cops story seems right... Still not sure about excessive force beyond that, if the guy was running away wounded, hands up, not sure how much of a threat he is anymore... but was he really?? I guess that was coming from his buddy that just robbed the store with him, and turned states evidence to avoid hard time, was there anybody else corroborating his story?? like I said, I was not there and am awaiting more facts coming out.
One burning question of the protesters I do have though is how does looting and rioting help in fighting their cause of this being a wrongful death?? Those are the actions I see that brought in the heavy handed riot police, to deal with them, short of that it could have been a meaningful peaceful protest.
It’s very possible even likely that if the officer came upon Brown a few minutes after the robbery that both the officer and Brown heard the BOLO {Be On Look Out} go out over his radio. Second possibility Brown though the officer knew. It is also standard procedure in most departments to run a wanted check that too could have triggered it. The stop likely was for just what was initially said which was jaywalking/obstruction of traffic. Some felons get very dangerous when cornered and think they are caught.
All of this is a political NEWS BLACKOUT.
Notice the word “BLACKout.”
Brown was simply an animal that robbed a store and then attacked a cop in his car while trying to arrest him. Now, when the story broke, a total BLACKout was imposed and little pieces of the story were spewed by the police so that no one would actually know what happened and why.
This is the worst case of the police being afraid of the politics and public smearing by the “race baiters” I’ve ever witnessed. The police were petrified to let any information come out and we still don’t know what happened in that police car.
Keep your guns oiled and loaded for something like this will come to a neighborhood near you in the future.
If that’s true then the BOLO would be a matter of record but since it was a petty theft of a few cigars odds are that there was no BOLO.
And if there was a BOLO it would have been released by the Chief today and it wasn’t.
That’s exactly my point, too. Brown knew he just robbed a store and assaulted its keeper. His paranoia could have triggered the entire violent response to the LEO.
Anyone from the NYC metro area should remember the LIRR shooter from decades ago; a “black rage” defense was used (in which the system of oppression led him to commit the shooting). The perp (Colin Ferguson) wasn’t even American, and still some were willing to give him a pass.
I pity anyone who has to be in close proximity to the urban underclass.
The policeman who stopped Brown supposedly said that he heard a call to be on the lookout for two perps just as he saw Brown and his buddy walking down the street.
Me too. They deserve our praise not our scorn. Sure there are some bad ones and yes they need to be removed. But for the majority they are very good at their job and don't deserve the non rev al and his minions. . . .
It was petty theft, but nice try.
it was STRONG ARM ROBBERY which is a felony. get it through your fat head yet?
Of course any cop in the area would have heard the call reported by the owner.
was NOT petty theft.
His Chief said the confrontation was over him walking in the middle of the street NOT the strong arm robbery.
Got it — let it sink in.
