Geraldo Rivera: Michael Brown And Trayvon Martin, Spinning Tragedy
Fox News Latino ^ | August 15, 2014 | Geraldo Rivera

Posted on 08/15/2014 3:59:40 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It is outrageous that we only found out now, nearly a week after the fact, that 18-year-old Michael Brown, the kid tragically killed on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, met the description of a suspect in a strong-arm robbery of a convenience store obtained from a 911 call received at 11:51 a.m. on Saturday August 9. Ten minutes later, at 12:01 p.m., and just a ¼ mile away, Brown and his alleged accomplice are spotted and confronted by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson.

If Officer Wilson heard the 911 call, of course the cop is tensed up. The six-year veteran with a spotless record is facing a belligerent 6’4” 250 pound kid who the cop may have reasonable cause to believe is a suspect who has just forcibly robbed someone.

Why the delay in releasing the information about the robbery?

Late Friday afternoon, the muddled police chief of Ferguson, Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson said Officer Wilson never drew the link between that strong-arm robbery and the jaywalking incident that supposedly captured the cop’s attention ten minutes later.

So why release the explosive surveillance video of the convenience store robbery at all if there is no connection with the kid’s subsequent death?

The video shows the convenience store incident starting as a minor shoplifting of a box of cigars apparently by Michael Brown. When the diminutive store clerk confronts the big kid, Brown appears to whack him up the side of his face. Then, pushing past the stunned clerk, Brown and a pal leave the store.

The family of the victim says the release of the video is just character assassination. I disagree. At the very least, watching the surveillance video of Brown allegedly robbing the convenience store should alter our perception of the victim....

Sorry Jerry. An 18 year old, 290 pound, 6’4” behemoth with a chip on his shoulder is NOT A “KID”.

Now go back and read it.

Right you are. Rivera actually wrote a balanced piece here. From the article:

"But efforts by activists to portray the unarmed teen as a choirboy maliciously murdered by a racist cop are misguided, unhelpful and untrue."

I wonder if he’s going to do a special feature presentation where he’s huddled down behind a car and there is rioting going on in Madison Square with maltov cocktails flying and cars being turned over with and then they cut to commercial break a little late and we’ll hear a director yell, “Cut”’

: )

All the puff pieces about how black men are victims of racism and police violence just dropped significantly after it was revealed Micheal “baby” Brown robbed a store, beat on an Indian clerk....

Those from the white-dominated suburbs will see the young man as a bully and a crook that probably did something to provoke the violence that led to his death. Residents of the inner city will see the slain youngster as a surrogate for every black man ever killed by police violence.

As Senator Rand Paul of nearby Kentucky just wrote in Time Magazine, “Anyone who thinks race does not skew the application of criminal justice in this country is just not paying close enough attention.”

It is America’s dirty secret.

Wow. Am I really reading an indictment of black on white racism - from General Geraldo? I'm stunned.

I think pictures of the cops face are now front and center in this incident.

If his face is bruised and cut significantly, or indeed at all, it will show what the officers state of mind, therefore his intent was as he was pulling the trigger.

I don’t mind saying that if some 6’ 6” 290 lb man was pounding on me and I had a gun he would be a dead big guy AND with multiple holes in his bod!

On the other hand, IF Brown did indeed fall to his knees with his hands up in the air, and then the cop started shooting, the cop is justifiably in big trouble no matter what.

Bottom line: We still don’t know all the facts.

As Senator Rand Paul of nearby Kentucky just wrote in Time Magazine, “Anyone who thinks race does not skew the application of criminal justice in this country is just not paying close enough attention.”

I'm sorry, but public officials need to be careful what they say in situations like this. This comment would feed into the mindset of those angry over this shooting. The fact is, this may not have been a bad shoot at all, and the public should not be fed statements that are counter-productive.

Here Paul tries to come off as a candid straight shooter, and instead comes of as a dim-witted violence enabler.

Residents of the inner city will see the slain youngster as a surrogate for every black man ever killed by police violence.

This about the best we could hope for from Jerry Rivers. It still displays a very twisted view that police are the ones who instigate violence in Black neighborhoods.

Jerry, I'm not saying every police shooting is justified, but to act as if the police are the ones who cause the violence is the product of a very lazy mind.

Agreed. Rivers is spot on here.

But then there's this line: "The video shows the convenience store incident starting as a minor shoplifting of a box of cigars apparently by Michael Brown. When the diminutive store clerk confronts the big kid, Brown appears to whack him up the side of his face."

That makes the charge go from "minor shoplifting" to "robbery" and "assault", doesn't it?

Frankly I was stunned by that video. Either the clerk is tiny, or Brown was a huge, very powerful thug.

He pushes the clerk around like a rag doll.

I can totally buy the cops story now.

Even a big cop would have trouble trying to wrestle with a gorilla like that.
