Time to lay off Tony Stewart
Washington Examiner ^ | August 13, 2014

Posted on 08/13/2014 6:01:44 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

I drove race cars for three years. I know race cars and race car drivers. It's time to lay off Tony Stewart.

Don't get me wrong. Whatever should be said about him as a human being, Stewart is a phenomenally talented race car driver, likely one of the all-time greats of motorsports.

By comparison, my racing was infinitely more humble, including three years of competition in the Sports Car Club of America and the International Motorsports Association — i.e. club and semi-pro — levels.

I raced on asphalt road courses like Watkins Glen and Summit Point with left and right turns, never on super-speedways or dirt tracks with only left turns.

But here's the thing: The physics of driving a race car are the same whether you are going 130 mph in a Formula Ford in the rain on a road course, 190 mph in a NASCAR stocker on a bright sunny day at Daytona's superspeedway or 100 mph at night on a little dirt track bullring in Canandaigua, New York.

A great graphic of this concept is a flat track motorcycle in a full power slide. In a left turn, the wheel is turned right (sometimes to the full lock) to stabilize the bike and allow the rear end to slide. The same physics is used in a sprint car - it just more obvious on a flat track motorcycle.

OK, no prob. With this screen name I should not have made such a typo! ;-)

“Pingers any better?
Richard ?”

Huh?

You are now diverting away from the posted issue, aren’t you? ;-)

As a reminder, we were discussing “Fat Boy”, which was a handle given to him by his peers. I was simply quoting his peers. That is why I tried to put quotation marks surrounding “Fat Boy” when I used it. ;-)

However, I did/do realize that I was/am going to get, undeservedly so, negative remarks for finding fault with one of your NASCAR heroes. ;-)

“Fat Boy” has always been a ticking time bomb and everyone knows it, including those who defend him.

bingo! spoiled brat kid...made that way by his unloving parents. if they had loved him, he would have not been so upset by crashing, because he would have had the humility to understand that that is part of the game. He acted just like a spoiled brat...to the extreme. Now he is in hell..or heaven..God only knows.

I read another account from a driver who said the accident which made Ward so angry was probably his fault, too. He said you don’t get in a driver’s blind spot on the right side coming out of turn.

I’ve only driven on one banked oval ,, most of my driving was sports cars .. but everything I know and have heard suggests that the straightaway of a dirt oval being hard packed ... the car would not have turned with the steering wheel , there was nothing for the tires to bite into , just plowed... especially at low speed with no downforce available from the wing.

One thing everyone seems to forget is that it takes about 300 millisecs to comprehend what you see and another 500 to reposition your feet and operate a pedal ,, hitting the brakes was NOT AN OPTION...

Stewart likely saw the kid late with the wing and other visual obstructions... the only thing he could have done was what he did ... if he could do it over he might have used MORE throttle and hoped to point directly at the infield or even spin/flip...

I've seen another still shot where his right leg was even further down the track. Wonder if he slipped on the wet surface. Just a horrible accident I believe.

Actually, you are the one “diverting from the posted issue” as in your original posting you brought something that occurred at an entirely different type of racing event.

“Actually, you are the one “diverting from the posted issue” as in your original posting you brought something that occurred at an entirely different type of racing event.”

Hmmm, I thought that the ‘connection’ was obvious, i.e., “Fat Boy” ran Truex and Edwards off of the track and wrecked them. He ran the child off of the track Saturday night didn’t he? Coincidence? ;-)

As I said in another post, “He is a ticking time bomb.”

“You are a piece of work.”

Why would you be ‘ticking’? The fact that you suited “Fat Boy” up for his first IndyCar ride would mean what, exactly? What is your point about that? Am I supposed to be impressed? Not!

Big Red Badger, huh? Wisconsin? NASCAR is a Southern thing. You should be prohibited from posting anything at all about NASCAR! ;-)

Let me repeat: “Fat Boy” is a ticking time bomb and, in your heart, you know that it is true. That is exactly why you are ‘offended’. Poor, sweet baby.

You should get a sense of humor.

ROFL

I see no connection that you claim is so “obvious.”

I do not follow NASCAR so have no idea what you’re talking about in regard to “Fat Boy.” I only even know any of the names you mention because I lived in Dover for over 20 years and still occasionally check to see who I know on the podium at the beginning of the races at Dover Downs.

I only became interested in this particular situation because of friends who are familiar with the different styles of cars involved in the different forms of racing AND my absolute hatred for members of the media claiming they are “experts” on subjects of which they know absolutely nothing.

I agree with you 100% except that my hatred of the media extends far beyond NASCAR. They are all pseudo-intellects.

So what you are saying is that nobody should have an opinion on Tony Stewart who have not raced cars themselves.

Using that same logic, nobody can criticize the president unless they themselves were a president. Nobody who has not fought in a war should have an opinion on war. Those who are not women should not have an opinion on abortion. Etc., etc.

Travelling at those speeds and likely could have killed someone, he purposefully wrecks two cars? Is that standard operating procedure?

In a word, YES. Rubbing is Racing. If it bothers you so much, go back to watching your tennis or golf games.

Well - DUH - what the blazes did you think I meant?

I was a member of the media - but was out before I succumbed to what just beginning, but has now become the norm, of “news” by press release.

My point, which you totally avoided, is accused another poster of changing the subject, when it was actually you who changed the subject because you have some problem with a particular race car driver.
