Times Square is quickly becoming the costume capital of the world. They seem to be everywhere. City officials have said they want to crack down, but now the people who wear the costumes also want to take action and organize to protect their jobs.

You know them as Elmo, Cookie Monster and Woody, but the people who wear these costumes decided to take on a new name: Association of Artists United for a Smile New York City.

Understandable if some character now has to compete with all the newcomers you have to get more aggressive to make money. About time the City got rid of them.

How do you unionize with no common employer to collectively bargain with? Aren’t these just attractive beggars?

Sounds more like a medieval guild than a union.

Their paradigm is shifty. If you take a picture of them, they expect to get paid.

Cool. Right after you guys unionize you can all start paying licensing fees to the intellectual-property owners whose work you are stealing.

I am genuinely puzzled about Disney’s apparent acquiescence to the use of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Pluto for public panhandling in Times Square. Disney has a significant corporate presence there, with a large store and several Broadway theaters running their musicals.

Generally DIsney is well-known for vigorously defending their I.P.

How can you unionize without wages? More like a gang.

Woody? He's an instigator.

Let them unionize. Then Marvel and Disney can have an entity to sue for trademark infringement and trademark defamation, and each union member will be liable.

Who would let one of those “characters” touch your kids? Who knows what is under that costume?

Have you ever noticed that the more insignificant a socialist organization is the longer their name? And the wackier their leadership.

Association of Artists United for a Smile New York City

Here’s their full acronym:
AoAUFaSNYC

Looks like a computer generated password.

Even a shorter acronym is just too damn long.

AAUSNYC

They need some marketing advice, like a snappier name, easy to pronounce and remember.

Something like, Costumed Actors Cavorting Around.

Now that will get you in the news.

Headline
CACA Strikes Times Square!

But that aside, what action can they take to force whoever to the negotiating table?

Marching with signs in costume? Well, there’s a free photo op for you. Marching out of costume?

Nah, better to empower individual and let the market place decide on the favorite.

Besides, who doesn’t like to see Goofy kicking the crap out of Elmo or Bigbird at lunchtime?

Not sure why they’d bother. What are they looking for, mandatory tips from tourists? What can they do if they don’t get their way, go on strike?

Not a very catchy handle they’ve come up with: AOAUFASNYC

Even better: PHU (pan handlers union)
