Reveille for Revel: State capitalism, Jersey-style, goes bust.
National Review Online ^ | August 13, 2014 | Kevin D. Williamson

Politicians often are very shrewd investors — with their own money. If Al Gore wanted to move his money around in cash, he’d need a fleet of forklifts. But they’re rotten investors with your money. President Barack Obama had his Solyndra, and New Jersey governor Chris Christie has his casino, Revel, the multibillion-dollar Atlantic City boondoggle that, having declared bankruptcy — twice — just announced that it will be closing its doors and putting its 3,100 employees out of work.

Christie ponied up over $250 MM of tax payer money plus several hundred million more of state pension money to finish the construction of what suppose to be a "destination resort", de-emphasizing gambling, in Atlantic City. After only 2 years it the doors are closing. The very idea of a "destination resort" in the sewer of Atlantic City must gone down as one of the most delusional business plans in history.

I’m growing concerned to see the blue states growing even bluer and the red states tinging purple. I believe that despite the conservative wins around the country, this November might not make anything better.

“State Capitalism”

That sounds like a liberal concept: like ‘Government-run Free Market’ or ‘Consensus Science’.

Revel was an amazing project. Unfortunately, it was in Atlantic City, which is not an amazing city.

A question I'd love to see in a Republican primary debate:

Which character in Atlas Shrugged do you most identify with?

1. Wesley Mouch

2. Mr. Thompson

3. Floyd Ferris

If Ted Cruz is in the debate, I'll add a fourth: John Galt.

Otherwise, I'm not giving a RINO an easy out.

Atlantic city did “improve” over the years by demolishing slums in the city. However, the people inhabiting those slums remained. Also, when “improvement” mainly was bulldozing areas and planting grass, it left a weird landscape which (especially at night) was not inviting. Maybe if they had built 20 foot fences topped with concertina wire that would have helped...or maybe broken glass.

I wasted 15 years of my life working in AC and every night I pray for a meteor to hit it and leave a 20 mile wide crater.

The appearance of a tower crane is strongly correlated with an impending Democrat disaster. If one appears near your neighborhood it’s time to move far away.

95-story casino/condominium/107,000-seat racetrack/giant Ferris wheel (not kidding), not in Atlantic City but in Jersey City

Need another cup of coffee, read that as a 107,000 seat Ferris wheel.

Only slightly OT but right now I am reading the “Boardwalk Empire” ebook. The history of Atlantic City. Fascinating stuff. And right now I am on the chapter about Nucky Johnson. The Glory Years of AC were definitely during the Roaring 20s.

They call it “economic development”, and every burg with more than one stoplight people has a department and at least one employee whose job it is to spend taxpayer dough to travel, schmooz, and bribe businesses to come to town.

It’s Soviet 5-year-plans with a false face, and if I owned an established business, I would file some sort of lawsuit for using my money to help a competitor.

Americans have accepted so much crapola from the government, they think they like the taste.
