I had a surprise last night. I watched a PBS documentary about Jimmy van Heusen. I knew a lot of the songs he wrote with various lyricists and how he ended his career in a musical partnership with Sammy Cahn. What I didn’t know until last night was that he and Sammy wrote this song.

I always liked this tune because it opened a window into what a 1920's recording would have sounded like had it been recorded on modern equipment. I also found the lyrics to be wonderfully funny. Anyone who can turn Sodom-and-Gomorrah into an adjective has my undying admiration.

Julie Andrews: “Thoroughly Modern Millie”

Great tune sung by a great artist! What a shame her voice is now gone. :(
