A clinical trial of an experimental vaccine against the deadly Ebola virus is set to start shortly, according to British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, which is co-developing the product with U.S. scientists.
The world's worst outbreak of Ebola has killed nearly 1,000 people in West Africa and the disease could continue spreading for months, increasing pressure on researchers to accelerate their work on new medical interventions.
There is no proven cure or vaccine to prevent infection with Ebola and the scale of the current outbreak has prompted the World Health Organisation to declare it an international health emergency.
GSK's experimental vaccine has already produced promising results in animal studies involving primates and it is now due to enter initial Phase I testing in humans, pending approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
A company spokeswoman said on Sunday that the trial should get underway "later this year", while GSK's partner the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said in a statement on its website it would start "as early as fall 2014", implying a potential September launch of testing.

Funny, I had the urge to watch “I am Legend” before this was announced.
In order to finally show some leadership, the lyin’ king should volunteer to be the trial subject. Of course that would mean exposing the subject to the virus to ensure the vaccine works as advertised.
I say that I feel like the Bruce Willis character visiting the past in The 12 Monkeys. The world really does seem that way to me, so utterly convinced I am that we are in the “very last days” of the most “glorious” and prosperous periods in human history.
What about the treatment from tobacco that actually cured those two white people?
We too. We’re all just rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic.
“What about the treatment from tobacco that actually cured those two white people?”
The vaccine option will make more money for corporations. If I understand correctly, GSK is co-developing the vaccine with Monsanto and the Department of Defense. Monsanto is subcontracting with a small tech company to produce the vaccine. There are millions of dollars to be made this way, as opposed to curing it.
I realize that this comment is extremely cynical, but is there any reason to believe that our government has our best interests in mind any more?
Since the stats for survival were likely in the 55% for these two (early treatment), pretty hard to say what did what.
This ebola outbreak will probably kill less than a dozen Americans when it is through.
However, the tuberculosis outbreak that will occur, a direct result of the Obama open borders, will kill thousands of Americans.
Those kids with “chickenpox” have been shipped all over the country.
There is no money in cures. The money is in the treatment. Does anyone actually believe that cancer will ever have a cure.
No expensive treatments at all. Just LOTS of juice (the juicer is pricey at about $2,600 but effective). Well, and coffee enemas... The real money in cancer is treatment. And if they accidentally cure you, well, they can't win them all.
You all catch that?
‘British’ pharma GSK. Thanks Obama! (and a 40% corporate tax rate).
I hope it works.
