British Smokers Being Denied Treatment by State-Run Healthcare Service
Breitbart London ^ | 8/11/2014 | David Atherton

Posted on 08/11/2014 3:20:34 AM PDT by markomalley

Scotland's second largest health board, NHS Lothian, will not be giving further treatment to smokers for non-urgent cases, with referrals from GPs being refused.

Dr. Zahid Raza said: "In Edinburgh, we will not see patients at the clinic that are still smoking. Evidence shows that they would not do well with the treatment." He also went onto say: "We try to avoid intervention and, in around 80 percent of cases, a smoker’s condition will improve just simply by stopping smoking and smoking other lifestyle changes."

Dr Jean Turner of the Scotland Patients Association said that she was "extremely disappointed", adding: "I'm really quite shocked. You should not refuse to see anybody and certainly not penalise patients who are smoking.

"It is very God like and highly unfair to refuse to see anybody referred…Doctors are there to see if they can help and relieve symptoms."

NHS Lothian is by no means unique. NHS Hertfordshire back in January 2012 also withdrew treatment to smokers and, as an ominous sign of the slippery slope, those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30 - i.e. the obese - are refused services too.

you have allowed your entire thinking on this to be co opted by the liberal template

Total horse sh!t.

Tell me do you smoke?

Sorry good buddy, but I'm not making any mistakes at all. It is you and the other selfish guy who think that you should be able to do what you want and get other people to pay for the consequences of your stupid behavior who are making the mistake.

I'll ask you what I asked the other guy, (and I don't expect an honest answer from either of you but I'll ask anyway) Do you think AIDS treatment should be paid for out of taxpayer dollars?

You favor the gummint telling free people that they can not do things that are legal or they won't be treated in a hospital?

Take the King's Coin, do the King's Bidding. Ahh, the beauty of socialized medicine.

no, i don’t smoke, and am in extremely good health and shape - but I have an extremely well tuned liberal radar system, and while you are not a liberal, you have bought into it in this case.

You can’t refute a damned thing I said, you can only throw out an absurd theory that I could only be for liberty on activities I enjoy. So add projection to your list of problems on this thread. Go find your inner liberal, and PURGE IT.

…and you missed the biggest point of all (small minds often do) - which is that this entire discussion is why we MUST stop Obamacare in this country. This is wht happens whenever citizens look at each other as line item expenses instead of citizens.

But again, you’re so strapped into your high horse, you don’t realize how low your argument is.

****
Well, many have tried to quit smoking, but I think the average smoker will be hard pressed to carry through with “smoking other lifestyle changes”. What!?

What about their dimes? You know, the ones they paid in. Now you don’t want to give them back when their lifestyle choice is one you disapprove of.

So you support taking their money at gunpoint to pay for your care but don’t want to give them the same courtesy. That my friend is thievery any way you slice it.

That’s the worst part of all. Normally conservative people under socialized medicine who are paying for healthcare suddenly become nanny staters.

Don’t forget male queers have the shortest average lifespan; some 20 years shorter than the average smoker. What about alcohol?

If I were President, I'd offer to buy back every Medicare card, and all its "benefits", for what the individual had had deducted from his lifetime paychecks, plus 5% compound interest. For most people, this would be about $75,000 to $150,000.

It would be a total financial win toward reducing our deficit projections .....

until a couple of years later, when the millions who had taken those buybacks, and then pi$$ed away the money, started showing up in emergency rooms pleading for "help".

I’m very happy for your son-in-law and all associated family members. I have friends who have benefitted greatly, as well.

Nonetheless, this procedure is more like treatment for smoking-related conditions that it is like patching up an auto-accident victim or delivering a baby. This is true of much medical treatment, of course.

The main point, as far as I’m concerned, is that none of us should want our access to medical care - or others’ access - to be subject to the whims of unaccountable politicians or bureaucrats.

Costco hearing aids are $2500. The batteries are cheap and they last a week.

I never quite understood why a hearing aid is not considered a covered medical device. Can you (or anyone) tell me what they tell you about that? (My mother is in need of a hearing aid, but the cost is prohibitive, as you know.)

Regards,

PS: The NHS’s actions regarding smokers is preposterous. I wonder...do doctors THEMSELVES agree with this? Or are they just going along with what the government tells them?

>>“Not seeing patients that are still smoking”. That actually makes sense to me. If you’re not trying to help yourself. It’s like the old joke...”Doc...It hurts when I do this. Don’t do that”.<<

I’m sick. Call me an ambulance.

Okay, you’re an ambulance.

“Not seeing patients that are still smoking”. That actually makes sense to me.

Me too!!! In fact, I think people who have EVER smoked should be denied all treatment. Also, anyone who has ever taken any drug. DON'T TREAT 'EM! Also anyone who is overweight, according to the BMI chart. IF YOU WANT TREATMENT FOR THE MAJOR TRAUMA YOU GOT IN THE CAR WRECK, LOSE SOME WEIGHT, FATSO!! Also, anyone who has a high blood sugar. They aren't taking care of themselves!! Anyone who has been in the sun, anyone who does anything risky, and everyone who drives a car!!! Alcohol drinkers! DENIED!!! No treatment for these risk-mongers and daredevils WHO WANT TREATMENT ON OUR DIME!!!!

lifestyle choice is one you disapprove of

I notice that you're again dishonest about this. It isn't a lifestyle choice I approve of or disapprove of I couldn't care less if you smoke or not. It is a known fact that smoking increases health risks in a number of categories and increases occurrence of diseases such as lung cancer and emphysema. Smoking is a voluntary activity. No one puts a gun to your haead and says SMOKE! So logically A major premise you know smoking increses your risk of disease, and minor premise B smoking is voluntary conclusion C. You are voluntarily putting yourself at risk assuming a greater chance of disease.

Now as to giving your money back. The government has already spent it. However, I think that smokers should be opted out of the system on a going forward basis. Not pay any more in and not get any government funds when and if they come down with lung cancer.

I also notice neithe you nor the other socialist who wants other people to pay for voluntary risk related health issues has answered my question as to whether or not you think AIDS treatments should be government funded.

Tell me, do you think AIDS treatment should be paid for with public funds?”

Depends on the method of infection. Male queers, absolutely not. Unlike smokers, these are perverts. Queers vector all manner of infectious diseases to innocent people, many of which are young boys.
