Does anyone here breed dogs? I love a certain breed of dog and next year I am going to end one of my jobs and would like to buy and raise and train a few dogs of my favorite breed.
But I don't know how to start. Love information. Or even direction.
FreeRepublic you are like a husband, advisor, computer geek and everyday company to me. Love you all and wish I could have you all over for Chickensoup!!
And that is how they can afford the luxury of producing litters.
They had the cash beforehand.
:)
It’s good to be seen.
It means I’m still extant.
:D
I dunno. Which breed? I hate, hate the dangerous bully breeds.
Jean Kerree has given the very fine breed of poo dell a bad name. It’s really a fine dog. High intelligence, athletic, kind, loyal. What a shame to be associated with the French.
And how would you not be? :)
Might ask Madonna’s husband!

You made my day with this picture - what a good-looking JR! My dog was a terrific mouser. We had several close calls with the chickens. If JRs were bigger dogs, they’d rule the world! :-)
I’m getting some popcorn before I start reading. And I’m not even going to take a swing at that hanging softball.
I did a day long custody trial over six dogs who were in agility. Crazy.
Sorry, but if it’s not a basenji, it’s just a dog.
This is where I will be a little nasty. Bitches generally have 2 heat cycles a year. Unless you plan on having two females alternating litters, breeding one female every cycle is nothing short of backyard breeding and pretty darn close to a puppy mill. And it doesn’t give you any idea of how the pups turn out either.
Your whole ‘creating life’ angle, quite frankly, is scary.
Yep. I’ve seen nasty divorce custody cases over top K9 athlete dogs as well as siblings never speaking to each other again over ‘stolen’ foundation breeding dogs. Nasty stuff.
Don’t breed dogs. Thousands die in shelters every day. Why do you want to make more?
I have owned Dobermanns for 40 years.
I obviously am mad for the breed.
I have owned some exceptional dogs, including the two I now have.
I often think how wonderful it would be if only I could have “a little part of them with me” forever.
But I have never and will never breed a litter.
There are plenty of them out there when I want another and far too many in rescue.
Not far from me, over the WV line, are tons of backyard greeders who pump out puppies from worn out bitches, heat after heat after heat.
The pups are unhealthy because their mothers are depleted.
The uniformed people who fall in love with them soon find out that they have bought heartbreak.
*If* I showed and titled my dogs and they were of such incredible quality that surely, they would add something new or improved to the breed, *maybe*.
But I don’t.
So I won’t.
I absolutely, positively would never breed “UKC” dogs.
I can understand the desire.
There have been a few that I would give anything to have had a pup or two from, because I loved them *so* much.
But what of the other 4, 5, 7 or even 10 pups that I could not keep for my own?
Having brought them in the world, I would feel responsible for them, for the entirety of their lives.
I could not bear that even one of my beloved dog’s babies was living with abuse, hunger, cold, or mistreatment.
Excellent post.
She’s good, isn’t she?
