Indeed. There seems to be some confusion between a “radical, untested, serum that may actually cause more problems” with a “confirmed and tested, reproducible, safe treatment.”

Actually, it was a great opportunity for the drug company to try this out on humans. You had two people who were both medical professionals - they would absolutely understand the risks and be able to give informed consent. They were highly motivated to take the considerable risk as the alternative they were facing was so dire.
