LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. After losing his first bid for Tennessee governor 40 years ago, Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander shed his blue suit and buttoned-up appearance for a plaid shirt, hiking boots and a 1,000-mile walk around the state.
The goal was to connect with voters on a personal level, to make sure he could never be accused by any rival of not being one of them.
"I think Tennesseans and I know each other pretty well," Alexander said. "It's hard for me to come to Tennessee without meeting one or two families in whose home I spent the night when I walked across the state."
But after roughly four decades in office two terms as governor and two in the U.S. Senate, with two runs for president mixed between Alexander faces a challenge in the state's Thursday primary from a pair of tea party-styled primary challengers who have tried to cast the 74-year-old incumbent as out of touch with the state's increasingly conservative electorate.
"The voters are smart enough to see through the facade of what he's running on, which is a legacy that's over 30 years old as governor," said state Rep. Joe Carr, one of the two Republicans seeking to deny Alexander a third term. "People are going, 'OK, but what have you done in 12 years as United States senator?'"

Nope, sorry, they are not.
One of the big problems here is that there are TWO opposing candidates. Thus, George Flinn may siphon off some of the votes that could have been for Carr.
My hubby and I will be voting for Carr tomorrow.
C’mon Tennessee break the mold and send the old RINO geezer into retirement already. Enough with the Senate becoming a hospice country club for the elderly infirmed. Out with the old, in with the bold.
From what I hear, most folks are also voting or will vote for Carr.
Never heard of a Thursday election.
Go Carr!
The GOP-e always seems to find another candidate to split the vote.
“Never heard of a Thursday election.”
Apparently that’s custom there dating back to the early days of Tennessee in the 1790’s.
No, the biggest problem is the Carr campaign itself. Many of us in Middle TN haven’t heard a thing from the campaign. Lamar is now advertising, but due to lack of exposure, I think Carr will lose.
That being said, 6 votes came from my household for Carr! Go Joe!
McDaniel won (yes, he actually won Republican votes) by reaching out to all parts of the state. If Carr didn’t go there, will probably lose.
With all due respect to you, I have found over the course of many years that when statements like yours are bandied about near election time, the results usually show that those who claim they would or did, didn't.
“when statements like yours are bandied about near election time, the results usually show that those who claim they would or did, didn’t.”
Often that is very true and may even be correct in this case. Just telling what other folks I know are saying!!!
Most of my folks say what they mean and even keep their word.(most of the time!!!)
