A new gene linked to suicide risk has been discovered, and researchers say the finding could lead to a blood test that predicts a person's risk of attempting suicide.
The model correctly identified 80 percent to 96 percent of people who experienced suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide. It was more accurate among people at severe risk for suicide.
If the findings are confirmed and lead to a blood test for suicide risk, such a test might be used to screen people in psychiatric emergency rooms or to determine how closely a person needs to be monitored for suicide risk, the researcher said

Not a general breakthrough? Private benefit? Corporal punishment avoidance?
I foresee a new test requirement prior to approval to purchase a gun. And What do we do with someone if they test with a genetic proclivity? Force them to be medicated or have constant psychiatric oversight?
A mysterious interplay exists between the spiritual and physical worlds that defies secular science’s ability to posit causation.
I don’t underestimate the ability of secular science to screw it all up, however. Vulnerability to suicidal wishes can be a challenge, but it needn’t be styled as a destiny, which is the corner that secular science with its one dimensional models of causation tends to force us into. I.e. the science can be a great servant to a life philosophy that is based upon classical theology. It can’t supplant it.
Sounds Looney Tunes To Me.
The mind is quite the mystery. Way beyond the scientific method, especially in individual cases.
I probably personally would have pegged the needle on that thing... and so what. That’s only one small facet of the issue.
God never lets a challenge into this world wantonly. This kind, included. Perceiving the larger spiritual battle and yielding to the eternally advantageous combatant, always wins the game. A capacity to yield to the devil’s call to destroy oneself might also reflect in a special positive capacity in God’s service, perhaps a degree of yielding to God (and gaining the according blessing) that few others would find possible.
One of the classics.
Yup, and it addresses the issue of trying to predict behavior scientifically.
There used to be a “science” that argued criminal behavior could be determined by studying “bumps on the head.”
I’m no fan of the “future crimes unit.”
If there’s more than 3 liters on the floor....you’re at risk.....
Just think of the privacy concerns. Will the government have the right to test you even against your will.....or will government have the right to your test results. Think about your own privacy after age 18 if you are tested and they say you have the gene - what will your life become? What if the test is wrong? What if you are in the percentage the test misses? This is not a good thing.

Agree. If a blood test can detect that, then why not serial killers, LGBTs, etc.? .........Seems some people are tossing out bait to get more grant money for studying the subject further.
That was my first thought when I heard about this test a few days ago..
I would agree.
