Rats though Hamas are, that’s actually credible. The IDF immediately laid a big bombardment on the area after Rosin’s capture, in accordance with what it terms the Hannibal Directive, which aims at preventing the bearing off of live Israeli prisoners by injuring the captors, striking their vehicle, etc, even at the risk of injuring the Israeli prisoner. Some IDF officers have stated the view that it’s preferable for the IDF to kill one of its own soldiers than allow him to be taken captive. Unsurprisingly the Hannibal Directive (or Procedure) is a controversial matter in Israel. Numerous soldiers and their families find it repellent.
