Why would anybody but an American serve as the US army chief of staff?

The WSJ describes it as a “rare sign of cooperation”. Specious description. I say this is a sign of US submission, given the US leadership at present.

Obama is not an America, but an Indonesian,
which is why the borders are open,
al qaeda fill in within BOTH the CIA and DOD,
and the military will soon be al Qaeda and Hamas.

America is so screwed, thanks to the selfserving
EXEMPT Congress which could not give a damn.

Makes sense, since we have a non-American president.

Is he required to join the US Army or is he allowed to remain a German Army officer?

A German certainly has no allegiance to the US.

This is an old Soviet tactic. You move troops out of their homelands to “guard” other civilians. Then they have no qualms about firing on the locals since their families don’t live there.

Chief of Staff is bad. Very bad.

Look - Army do secondments all the time. I had 18 months at Ft. Bragg and had 5 squads of US soldiers under me. That were fun and gave me a life long affection for Texans. They party hard and work even harder! :) .

I’ve had a Nepalese CO for a bit, and an Aussie. Couple of Israelis, and commanded two squads of Iraqis.

But it is temporary. That is the deal. Deploy then move on. You sort of are in the chain of command and you also are not.

But Chief of Staff for a region is up there in President territory. You want a native who is totally loyal to the country. Think about the sheer volume of intel he’s going to be getting every single day (poor sod). Sure, Germany is an ally now - but for how long.

Welcome to the New World Order. You no longer have a national border and you no longer have a Constitution.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Aerospace_Defense_Command

Above is a link explaining the bi-command structure of NORAD. An American four star and a Canadian three star. I had thought that at one time or another a Canadian was in command but didn’t find a reference to that.

I don’t know what the German will command. I had thought that US forces never served under a foreign commander. In WW1 the allies desperately lobbied to use the US forces as piecemeal replacements for their losses. But the general in command refused, so it must have been up to him. He held them out of combat as long as possible as they were insufficiently trained. Then he relented and threw them into battle (Bellow Wood?) to save the allies bacon and, as I recall, we took multi-thousand casualties, which was common in nearly every battle then.

If a foreign commander lost significant US forces lives I’d imagine that would cause a significant political problem at home. Anybody know if this position commands people or is it advisory?

The Chief of Staff does not command combat forces. He serves as major staff assistant to the Commanding General of U.S. forces in Europe, who is an American.
