Police detained two men at a Midtown hotel late Friday after a doorman reported they possessed a pair of pressure cookers like those used to make the Boston Marathon bombs.
But the men say it was a misunderstanding: They plan to use the pressure cookers back home to prepare rice, chicken and meat.
Mohammad Alotaibi, 20, and Ayoub Alawadhi, 21, pulled up to the InterContinental Hotel on East 48th Street on Friday evening with the pressure cookers in their car trunk, said law enforcement sources.

A rice cooker is not the same as pressure cooker.
Now if that asian names, that would be different.
Terrorist!
No kitchenettes at ALL... no place to use a pressure cooker...
Did they even take the pressure cookers inside the hotel? Or were they in their car and the doorman saw them?
I guess you can cook meat and veg with the rice in some rice cookers and pressure cookers, from what others have said. So I guess people would do it for flavour and convenience maybe. The rice cooker I have is just a pot with an ‘on’ switch that heats up and then turns off when the rice is done.

Had forgotten about the cooking fire. It was a Lockheed L1011/Saudi Airlines flight 163 in 1980. Smoke inhalation got most of them and two butane stoves and a used fire extinguisher were found in a cargo area.
Rice cookers made specifically for the job negate the need for a pressure cooker. Done in 20 minutes or less.

Pressure cooker yields a MUCH superior product.........
Could be a “centrally” regional thing? Im due North of Max...in Northern Wisconsin. Here hocks are common too. Here we use the pressure cooker for the fresh ones then roast them in sauerkraut with apples and serve with potato dumplings. On occasion that large full length ones are available Ive been known to rotisserie them and have them with sweet and sour red cabbage and mashed potatos.
“Here hocks are common too. “
I can’t believe I’m so totally in the dark about hocks-—and I’m an old lady. Thanks for the info.
I have a daughter-in-law who is a superb cook and I’ll give her the hock advice and see what she can do.
I’m getting hungry. :-)

They live in Idaho, just completed summer school in Michigan, but never heard of the Boston bombing — as you point out, how credible is that?!
They go to an Arab supermarket in Dearborn, Michigan where they purchase TWO, count them, TWO, pressure cookers, on their way to NY for some fun!
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the city with the largest percentage
of Arab Americans is Dearborn, Michigan (southwestern suburb of Detroit) at nearly 30%.
Did those police know this information? No, this was a planning in progress of
bombing NY. Oh man, they're going to be hit again very soon.
I think the Boston bombers said that their next target was going to be New York,

Boston Marathon bombing suspect moved to federal medical center
“The move comes a day after New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg revealed the suspects had Times Square in their sights before law enforcement authorities put an end to their bloody terror spree.
“New York was next on their list of targets,” Bloomberg said of Dzhokhar and his brother Tamerlan. The fact is, New York City remains a prime target for those who hate America and want to kill Americans.
One pressure cooker --improbable story. More than one pressure cooker --unbelievable story.
The only targets with cookers would be soft targets, markets, or even the polls in Nov.
Rice is not cooked in a pressure cooker because it gums up the cooker.
When I heard NY was issuing illegals with ID so they wouldn't "have a hard time dealing with law enforcement" I was sure they had forgotten about 9/11. They are busy issuing legal IDs to people they know nothing about. Makes no sense to me.
I don’t know what these guys were up to, but I guess a lot of people do use one to cook rice. You put the rice in a separate pot inside the pressure cooker I guess. Have no idea if it is safe or not!
