National Guard in Texas Could Get Arrest Power
NYT ^ | July 24, 2014 | MANNY FERNANDEZ

Posted on 07/26/2014 12:22:29 PM PDT by QT3.14

When Gov. Rick Perry of Texas announced plans to deploy 1,000 National Guard troops to help with the border crisis, it came with a power unexpected by some. By deploying them himself rather than through Washington, he has the power to order the troops to make arrests and apprehensions, something Guard troops in past border deployments have been prohibited from doing.

Immigrant rights advocates and others, including former federal officials involved in previous National Guard mobilizations, said the troops would lack both training and federal oversight, creating a risk of civil rights violations and deadly encounters with immigrants.

Perry is an idiot. That's a given.

I hope the guard is armed and authorized to use force anyway.

“civil rights violations”

What civil rights are illegals entitled to? And based on their screwing up of everything they touch, a lack of federal oversight can only be a wonderful thing...

"“civil rights violations”

If you shoot them as they are crossing there is no violation.

would it be possible for other states to contribute help to Perry / Texas in this effort? After all, it is a national crisis.

“Perry is an idiot. That’s a given.”
In your book maybe, but he has done better things for the people of Texas than any democRAT as swipes.
I guess you don’t assign the same level of intelligence to the fraud in the white hut?
Criticizing those who fight for our side gets us no where. I would rather go hang out with Perry than anyone associated with DemocRATS or Rinos.
Perry is not perfect, but he does fight for our side. And you?

And the GOPe is saying something different?

If the republican GOPe gives Obama four billion dollars they’ll go down in history very very very badly

If Perry is really an idiot then the voters of Texas are bigger idiots for electing him Governor more times than any governor in Texas history.

Texas AND Perry must be something very right to have the best State economy and folks from all over the US clamoring to come here.

I’m pretty sure being turned back toward Mexico in the middle of the river or on dry land shy of the US does not violate any civil rights-so as long as that happens, I don’t see a problem-once their toes are back in Mexico, it is no longer our concern...

That is a legal issue for sure. Essentially the southern US/Texas border is the middle
of the Rio Grande in most places. It may vary somewhat in the major lakes, etc.

creating a risk of civil rights violations and deadly encounters with immigrants

Illegal Invaders don't have rights and if encounters are "deadly" maybe the rest will go home.

How soon before Obama federalizes the Texas National Guard and stations them to guard the Oklahoma border?

If they are in the water, turn them back at the midpoint, then watch to make sure they keep going and get out of the water on Mexican soil-no need to be fussy, just make sure they do that.
