The U.S. Embassy in Libya evacuated its personnel on Saturday because of ongoing militia violence in the capital, Tripoli, U.S. officials said.
About 150 personnel, including 80 U.S. Marines were evacuated from the embassy in the early hours of Saturday morning and were driven across the border into Tunisia, U.S. officials confirm to CNN.

Did we have 80 marines for MSG duty at Tripoli?
never mind. Saw it in the article
“You negotiate SOFAs with sovereign host governments. You don’t need a SOFA if you occupy and run the country. Understand?”
Then again, We invaded Iraq, we destroyed their government, we put a ex ambassador in total control. But that was not a occupation.....nooooooooo...
Regardless of the mistakes made, the US allow the same UN that has screwed up more countries in it’s relatively short history then communism, totalitarianism, and Nazi-ism combined to design a parliament. But they just dumped it on them and held elections, at least 5 years too soon.
So no sofa was needed because Iraq was now a government approved sovereign nation.
How’s that working for ya?
FULL CIRCLE....Right back to my original argument that you took so much offense over.
I said that we did it totally wrong. We should have occupied them, I said, for at least 30 years.
and NO SOFA.
So there we are....right back where we started.
Something else to say and it relates to a previous post about honest and continuity of promises by government.
When we went into Iraq for the second time, that was not good because we had already lost men, material and treasury on the first operation so we had to do it again and retake the same damn desert and fight those that we let get by us on the first attempt.
The government, knew it was going to be a hard sell, so Bush spent a year traveling and selling the idea that we were going to establish a democracy, a second democracy in the heart of the middle East as a counterweight to Iran.
That was the goal!
Now look at it!
I had a mentor who gave me some great tips about living and life in general.
He said (and you have heard it before) “That a job worth doing is worth doing well”.
Rephrased: “When you do a job, you do it well or don’t do it at all.”
All my arguments, probably a could thousand words over the last 20 hours or so, all boil down to that concept and I verbalized ways of doing that with our military goals when we use it. Or how we should decide to use it or not and just do proxy actions or political or just disinformation.
Simple as that, because I don’t like what is being done and the way it is being done in recent decades. Actually since Korea.
If that is the determination by the brass. Then the answer is simple. DON'T
Wrong. It was an occupation until the Iraqis elected a new government.
So no sofa was needed because Iraq was now a government approved sovereign nation.
A SOFA was needed with the legitimately elected government of Iraq.
I said that we did it totally wrong. We should have occupied them, I said, for at least 30 years. and NO SOFA. So there we are....right back where we started.
You are back where YOU started. There is no way we would occupy Iraq for 30 years. Our objective was to remove Saddam and prevent Iraq from becoming a sanctuary for AQ. Our big mistake was not leaving a residual force to assist Iraq in its transition. We failed to get a SOFA, which was by design. Obama and probably most of the American people wanted us to get out entirely. Hence Obama made sure that no SOFA would be obtained so he could use it as a pretext to leave.
We took back Kuwait the first time. We didn't invade Iraq. We didn't retake the same desert.
Kabar......we will have to do it again, and I would suggest ICBM’s because recruiting will be a bitch. have to reinstate the draft.
yeah we did. It was not much but we went in with a sweep to the right through the Iraqi desert.
Unfortunately, the sweep was scheduled for some 36 hours after the Kuwait force went in to Kuwait.
They finished up too early and the sweep that was designed to keep the republican guard from escaping, was still sitting in Saudi, according to what I have read.
By the time they realized what had happened the Iraqi convoys had left the station.
They then went pretty deep in country with choppers and shot up some of the fleeing trucks but they let a lot of them get back to Saddam.
The Iraqis had built slit trenches facing the sea and on the Saudi Border. They were taken by surprise. The Iraqis were looting Kuwait City.
The Iraqi military was a joke. Many surrendered to reporters. It was like shooting fish in a barrel, which is probably why Powell decided to show them some mercy. Saddam viewed it as a sign of weakness, which is why he violated his truce agreement with us. We set up no-fly zones in the North and South of the country to protect thge Kurds and the Shi'a. A second confrontation was always inevitable.
I have no real issue with it, but many still do.
I understand that the UN agreed to the removal of forces from Kuwait and not the pursuit into Iraq.
Agreements are agreements. If you need to violate it, don’t make it.
Germany...since 1945.
The lunatics are running the asylum
Why did we put them in power? Why are we cutting our own throat?
..................
The good news, you can still fly to Tripoli from the US
What did Sentor McCain have to do with it?
I ain’t a lover of any of our back stabbing Johns. But President Obama is still responsible for his own actions Not John McCain even if John McCain may have supported or encouraged those actions.
If your not aware of McCain’s role in Libya you really need to read up on current events. Just do an Internet search for McCain and Libya and McCain Syria and McCain Ukraine. The guy is going to get us into another war. Somewhere. Has to be with Obama’s blessing though.
Does McCain have the power to overrule Obama? Can he act without Obama in Libia or anywhere else?
The bottom line is Obama is responsible for his own choices and sharing that blame with anyone else is not being honest.
John McCain is a back stabbing Idiot who compromises the integrity of not only the Republican party the John house, but perhaps even the Republic, just like the John on the bench.
That does not however make him responsible for US policy in Libya, Syria, or the Ukraine. In each and every one of those cases the Buck stops with Obama.
