This was a not-so-subtle message delivered by the el-Sissi regime that the ties between the United States and Egypt have cooled considerably, Jonathan Schanzer, vice president for research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told TheBlaze on Wednesday.
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki brushed off any concerns about the security screening, tweeting that Kerry was focused on the objective of his mission securing a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
The Jewish-American news site the Algemeiner termed the incident symbolic, describing it in part as humiliation in Egypt.
The International Business Times observed that foreign governments normally trust U.S. officials enough not to check them with such stringent security measures and that when the courtesy is not extended, it could be viewed a sign of distrust.
Irans Press TV also noted: Many foreign officials grab every chance they get to extend courtesy to Washingtons top diplomats but it wasnt the case this time.
Politico chalked it up to a sign of the heightened security concerns. Egypt has experienced years of bloodshed, political upheaval and terrorist attacks beginning with the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, the takeover of the Muslim Brotherhood, a coup against the Brotherhood and the election of el-Sissi.
U.S.-Egyptian relations have been strained, following a perception in Egypt that the Obama administration offered excessive support to the Muslim Brotherhood leadership under former President Mohammed Morsi and was too slow to recognize Morsis ouster.
Now, Cairo is upset with the Obama administrations call for an immediate Israeli-Hamas ceasefire, which is more in line with a proposal tabled by its arch-rival Qatar, which funds Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt has offered its own cease-fire plan, which Israel agreed to last week.
According to Reuters, the footage also showed Kerrys senior aides walking through a metal detector and being checked with a wand. Those State Department officials included deputy chief of staff Jonathan Finer, senior adviser David Thorne and Psaki.
Yeah, we elected one too.
He probably gets tired of asking for Theresa for money. Probably pretty embarrassing also to have to do so in front of all his haughty friends, "Sweetums, can I have $5.00 so I can tip the bartender?"
They made Mr. Kerry go through security? Wow. Sounds reminiscent of Jenjiss Khan.
Kerry is pretty high up in obammy’s gub mint.
And there is NOTHING about obammy’s gub mint I trust, NOTHING.
Kerry’s cease fire proposal was for Israel to immediately cease operations (to include stopping destruction of tunnels) and for the embargo to be lifted on Gaza.
Maybe the Egyptians could organize a once-in-a-lifetime private tour of the Valley of the Kings for Kerry, or some belly dancers, or whatever will keep him occupied while the Men take care of business.
I suspect Israel knows a 10 day “humanitarian” cease fire (hudna) like Kerry proposed would be the end of the action. Basically they need to finish this, they won’t be able to restart operations in the near term. And I can’t help think an unstated objective is to eliminate the southern threat in the event of a strike on Iran.

Thanks SJackson.
Curiously, Politico is cited and it looks like it’s carrying water for the Egyptian government.
Egypt needs to treat the UN a-holes the same way.
Lurch’s job is to make Hillary look good at what she did at State ... at that he’s succeeding.
Distrust The One and his henchmen? Now why would anyone ever do that?
