Changes are coming to Wisconsin's Do Not Call Registry effective Aug. 1, the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection said Friday.
Users will no longer be required to register their phone numbers every two years, and their numbers will be placed on the national list aimed at preventing unwanted telemarketing calls and text messages.
Consumers can sign up once and not have to worry about whether their registrations lapse.
Also, new registrations will be handled by the Federal Trade Commission's national Do Not Call list, and those registrations will become effective the following day rather than weeks later, as was sometimes the case with the Wisconsin list.
Telemarketers covered by the list have up to 31 days from the date you register to stop calling you on your land line or cellphone.

If they just made it work, it would be an improvement.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Alas, 90% of the calls to our land line are charities. No amount of telling them no, do not contact seems to stop the nightly call. My understanding is that these folks are exempt. Grrr.
I have caller ID that shows up on my phone and on my TV screen if I happen to have it on. I never answer a phone call if I don’t know the caller. They can leave a message if it is important.
We got a talking answering machine that reads the caller id out. Had it for years. Haven’t actually answered that phone in years, either, unless it was someone we knew. If you want to talk to me, start talking to the machine, and if I care, I will pick up.
If the phone wasn’t only $10 a month we would have gotten rid of it ages ago. But it is nice to have a powered phone for those long work calls - those eat my cell phone battery.
Yes, cheap at almost any price.
We use our landline number whenever we need to give a phone and don’t want to answer any calls.
Over the last 4 years our calls have gone from several a day to one every week or two.
Works well. /NOT
The “Do Not Call” List is the biggest crock that’s ever been foisted off on the American public. TG for phones that can screen your incoming calls. Ditto for Faxes. And a pox on AT&T for giving off-shore companies numbers to use to call their residential customers. And try filing a complaint with the FCC as I did. It took exactly a year to inform me that “nothing could be done,” because the caller was in the Bahamas.
Since I’ve started getting SPAM on my cellphone, and every charity under the sun has been calling my elderly Dad, I signed up three numbers last week.
It was easy. Now, make it work!
I also have a land line through AT&T..they also cover my internet service. I use it only when I have to make a secure call. Any suggestions on a cheaper source for a land line, or should I stay with ATT?
