Do you know about the British bombing of Dresden, Germany?
The British bombing of Dresden, the seventh largest city of Nazi Germany was especially costly in civilian lives. It was difficult to get the exact figures because there were numerous refuges in the city. However, figures as high as 135,000 people perished in the fire storms sweeping the city from the Allied bombs.
Dresden was a strategic target because of the weapons and military equipment factories. It was also a key rail hub to send troops and military assets to the front lines.
3,300 tons of bombs were dropped on the city in three waves of attack. Many of the bombs were incendiary bombs that created so much fire that a firestorm developed. The more the city burned, the more oxygen was sucked in – and the greater the firestorm became. This caused people to suffocate without oxygen in the underground shelters. It is thought that the temperature peaked at 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. Such heat caused the streets to melt and become so hot that the fleeing population burned their feet so bad they fell to the ground to their deaths.
It took two weeks to gather up and burn the bodies.
The mad men of the Gasa had better take notice of history’s fate in store for them.
As a side note, Winston Churchill was considering the use of the atomic bomb against Nazi Germany.
